Episode 3 – Forest of Echoes

385 Words
The Forest of Echoes was unlike anything Seren had ever seen. The air shimmered faintly, as though the trees themselves breathed magic. Leaves glowed with a soft silver light, and every step echoed, not with sound alone, but with fragments of voices—laughing, crying, whispering—memories that didn’t belong to her. Seren gripped her amulet tightly. Each whisper brushed against her mind like fragile threads, urging her deeper. Darian walked ahead, steady and cautious. “The forest remembers everything,” he explained, his voice low. “Every word spoken here, every secret, every betrayal. That’s why it’s called the Forest of Echoes.” A soft laugh drifted between the trees. Seren froze, glancing around. “Did you hear that?” Darian shook his head. “Not the way you do. The spirits are speaking to you, Seren. Listen carefully—but don’t let them pull you astray.” The deeper they went, the stranger the forest became. The path bent upon itself, returning them to the same mossy stone three times. Branches shifted when they weren’t looking, as though the forest sought to test their resolve. Finally, the whispers aligned into words only Seren could hear: “Step where the stars fall, and the way will open.” She stopped, scanning the forest floor. There—patches of faint starlight fell through the canopy, marking a crooked trail across the ground. “Follow me,” she whispered, leading Darian onto the glowing path. As they stepped forward, the forest shifted. The air grew warmer, the whispers softened, and before them rose an ancient stone arch covered in runes. It pulsed faintly with power. Darian’s eyes widened. “An echo gate… These are remnants of the hidden realm. Few ever see one.” Before Seren could ask more, the arch flared with blinding light. A ghostly figure emerged—neither fully human nor spirit, but something in between. Its voice rang through the clearing, deep and resonant. “Traveler who hears the forgotten… to pass, you must answer.” The ground trembled. Seren’s heart pounded. “What kind of answer?” she asked. The figure’s eyes glowed like burning moons. “A riddle. Speak true, and the way shall open. Fail… and be lost among the whispers forever.” The first trial had begun.
