Javier's hand reached for Emily's neck, ready to remove the pearl necklace without hesitation. But Emily grabbed his wrist and stopped him.
"Not this!" she roared, her entire body stiffening as a primal cry escaped her throat.
Javier stared down at Emily for a split second, his face hardening before he forcefully pried her fingers away one by one. "Emily, stop being so incredibly petty! It is just a stupid pearl necklace. If Abby likes it, just give it to her! I will buy you a brand-new one later."
Despite the blinding pain shooting through her knuckles, Emily bit her lip, refusing to release her grip as she poured every ounce of her strength into resisting him. "Javier, have you completely lost your mind?! Have you forgotten what this is? This is the only physical thing my mother left behind for me before she died!"
Javier's movements froze instantly.
Hearing this, Abby's face completely dropped. She stomped her foot in a childish tantrum, her voice dripping with fake offense. "Fine, if it's a keepsake from Emily's mother, I won't take something that doesn't belong to me!"
With that, she spun around and stormed out of the house.
Javier's brow furrowed into a deep, angry scowl. With a sudden, violent yank, he ripped the pearl necklace straight off Emily's neck, not even bothering to glance at her as he clutched the jewelry and sprinted out the door after Abby.
Emily was thrown to the floor by his force, her temple hitting the corner of the cabinet heavily, drawing blood.
The sharp pain blurred Emily's consciousness. It took her a long time to gather enough strength to slowly sit up from the floor.
Through her blood-blurred vision, she seemed to see two cars crashing together in front of her.
She knelt before her mother, tightly holding her cooling hand.
Javier held her firmly in his arms, kneeling on the ground and swearing word by word: "I will do whatever it takes to treat Emmy well and never let her suffer any grievance. If I fail her, I am willing to go to hell and die a horrible death."
The past vows still echoed in her ears, but the reality was so ironic.
The tears she suppressed finally burst out at this moment. Emily held herself and cried bitterly.
'Mom, I was so foolish, I loved the wrong person... I will never cry for him again, and I will never like him again...'
When she woke up again, Emily found herself lying on the bed, the edge of the blanket carefully tucked in.
In her palm was the familiar touch of the pearl necklace. Her heart jumped, and she quickly looked down, but her heart sank completely again.
This was just a counterfeit.
Hearing the movement, Javier opened his eyes and sat up, shaking his numb arm. "Emmy, don't be angry. I only did that to comfort Abby last night and couldn't take care of you. Abby is still young. I explained it to her, and she agreed to return the pearl necklace to you. Don't be angry with her either."
Looking at the dark circles under his eyes and the bloody cuts on his hand from a carving knife, Emily only felt mockery.
What was he doing?
Comforting her emotions so she could obediently serve as a shield for their affair?
If she were still blind, she would really be deceived by Javier's trick.
Thinking that she only had to endure for six more days to leave completely, Emily forced a smile.
"I believe you. I know you would definitely convince her to return my mother's relic to me."
Javier visibly let out a sigh of relief. He put his arm around Emily's waist and pulled her into his arms. "I know you feel wronged. I prepared a surprise for you."
Outside the French window, fireworks suddenly exploded. Emily followed the sound and saw the brilliant colors burst in the dark sky, slowly forming the words: Abby, I Love You.
"Emmy, this firework display is for you. It writes my love for you in the night sky."
Javier held her, describing the fireworks vividly to her while using his phone to send a message to Abby.
Javier: Abby, I know you're angry that I suddenly went abroad, but I had to find a master to select pearls to make a replica for Emily, to fool her into thinking it's the one her mother left. Don't be angry, look at the sky, I prepared an apology gift for you.
Emily numbly withdrew her gaze and turned her head to look out the window. The night sky, which was reflected bright red by the fireworks just now, lost its heat in the next moment, leaving only a few wisps of pale smoke dissipating in the darkness, as if there had never been any light.
Just like Javier's feelings for her, going from passionate to cold neglect took only five years.
She just didn't expect that the lifetime he promised would be so short.
