"Some blood is not meant to exist... and once it does, it changes everything."
Lucien's POV.
The moment I left her room, I knew I had stayed longer than necessary.
The door had barely closed behind me when I stopped walking.
Not because I wanted to.
Because something refused to let me move on.
Her scent.
It still lingered.
Not faint.
Not fading.
It clung to the air around me, sharp and unmistakable, threading through my senses in a way that felt deeply wrong.
I inhaled slowly, deliberately.
And there it was again.
Her blood.
Not human.
Not entirely.
Different.
I had spent centuries surrounded by blood-feeding, hunting, ruling over it. I knew the difference between weak blood and strong blood, noble blood and common blood. I could tell age, fear, even lies from the way it smelled.
But hers...
hers did not follow any rule I knew.
It unsettled something in me.
And I did not like being unsettled.
I began walking again, slower this time, my thoughts no longer as controlled as they should have been. The long hallway stretched endlessly ahead, lit by dim torches that flickered against the dark stone walls. My footsteps echoed faintly, but even that sound felt distant compared to the noise in my mind.
Seraphina.
Even thinking her name felt heavier than it should.
I stopped again.
And then it came back to me.
Dimitri.
The vampire who had touched her.
The one I had killed without hesitation.
At first, it had seemed like nothing more than an overstep-another vampire forgetting his place, touching something that belonged to the king.
But now...
I knew that was not the full truth.
Dimitri had recognized it.
Her blood.
That was why he acted the way he did.
That was why he moved so fast.
That was why he ignored boundaries that would normally keep him alive.
Because he saw what others would not.
Only a few vampires could.
And Dimitri... was one of them.
He had lived long enough to understand rare bloodlines. Old bloodlines. Dangerous ones.
And the moment he sensed hers-
he made a decision.
Feed from her.
That was the only options someone like him would consider.
I turned slightly, my gaze lowering as my thoughts deepened.
If he hadn't seen her as a threat, he wouldn't have tried to feed on her immediately.
But Dimitri was not ruled by fear alone.
He was ambitious.
Calculating.
If he realized how valuable her blood could be...
he wouldn't have tried to waste it.
He would keep her alive.
Hide her.
Study her.
Use her.
That thought alone made my jaw tighten slightly.
Her blood could be used.
And that was exactly what made it dangerous.
I resumed walking, slower now, my mind shifting from memory to understanding.
There was a name for blood like hers.
A classification almost erased from history.
Sanguis Vitae Primus.
The first blood.
A rare, unstable bloodline that existed somewhere between human and something else entirely.
It did not behave like normal human blood.
It carried properties that could interfere with vampire nature itself.
Weaken instincts.
Distort control.
Corrupt power.
And if used correctly...
it could destroy us.
I exhaled slowly, my expression hardening.
I had seen it before.
Centuries ago.
The last time this bloodline appeared.
It had not ended well.
A child had been discovered.
At first, my kind thought it was an opportunity.
A weapon.
Something to use against rival clans.
Something to strengthen our rule.
But they misunderstood.
That blood was not meant to be controlled.
It was not stable.
It reacted.
It evolved.
It resisted.
And the child who carried it...
refused to submit.
Instead of becoming a weapon for us...
he turned against us.
He learned what his blood could do.
He learned how to use it.
And he almost destroyed everything.
Vampires lost control of themselves in his presence. Strong ones weakened. Ancient ones fell into madness. Entire covens collapsed under something they could not fight.
In the end...
we had no choice.
We burned him.
Not quickly.
Not easily.
It took time.
Too much time.
Even now, I remember it.
The resistance.
The way the blood fought back even as the body burned.
My fingers curled slightly at my side.
That was what her blood could become.
That was the future I could not allow.
I stopped walking completely.
Because now everything was clear.
Dimitri did not just attack her out of impulse.
He recognized the threat.
And at the same time...
he didn't recognize the opportunity.
If he could control her, he could use her blood to weaken stronger vampires.
To challenge power.
To rise above others.
Even above me.
But there was a risk.
A greater one.
If she ever discovered the truth about herself...
if she learned what her blood could do...
there would be no controlling her.
She would choose.
And I could not predict that choice.
I turned slightly, my gaze shifting toward the direction of her room, even though walls separated us.
She did not know.
That was the only advantage.
As long as she remained unaware...
she was not dangerous yet.
But the moment she understood...
everything would change.
The council would demand her execution.
My enemies would hunt her.
And those who sought power above all...
would try to claim her.
Use her.
Break her.
My jaw tightened.
No.
That would not happen.
Not while she was still under my control.
I began walking again, more decisively now.
The answer was obvious.
She could not be left alone.
Not in this castle.
Not anywhere.
Dimitri's attack had already proven that.
She had been seen.
Recognized.
That alone made her vulnerable.
And I had been lucky.
I was the first to notice her at the auction.
The first to understand that something was wrong.
If I had ignored it...
if I had walked away...
she would already belong to someone else.
Someone who would not hesitate to use her.
That thought lingered longer than I liked.
Eight years.
She had spent eight years in that pet shop.
Hidden.
Unnoticed.
Untouched by anyone who could recognize what she was.
It should have been impossible.
And yet it happened.
Which led to one question I could not ignore.
Why now?
Why did she appear in my path now?
Coincidence?
Or design?
I did not believe in coincidence.
Not at this level.
Not with something like her.
I stopped once more.
And then the thought formed clearly.
I needed her closer.
Where I could see her.
Where I could control who approached her.
Where I could react before anyone else did.
My chamber.
The idea settled heavily in my mind.
If she stayed near me, no one would dare touch her.
No one would question it.
No one would risk it.
But that also meant something else.
Constant proximity.
Constant awareness of her presence.
Of her scent.
Of that blood.
I exhaled slowly.
Unnecessary complications.
And yet...
necessary.
Because if my enemies discovered her before I secured the situation...
they would not hesitate.
They would take her.
And everything I built would become vulnerable.
I opened my eyes slowly.
There was no room for hesitation.
As long as she does not know what she is...
I still have control.
And as long as I have control...
she remains useful.
And safe.
But the moment that changes...
I will not hesitate.
Because I have seen what her kind can become.
And I will not allow history to repeat itself.
Not again.
