The moment everything changed

1002 Words
Royal Crest High didn’t recover from the photo incident. By second period, the entire school was on fire with rumors. “Mia and Ethan knew each other before?” “Why would he tear it down like that?” “Vanessa looked so angry…” “Something is definitely going on.” Mia heard it everywhere she walked. Whispers followed her like shadows. And for the first time, she didn’t feel invisible. She felt exposed. ⸻ Classroom Chaos Mia sat in class trying to focus, but her mind kept replaying Ethan’s words. You’re not ready to remember. Ready for what? Before she could think deeper— The classroom door opened. Again. Silence fell instantly. Ethan Hart walked in. Same calm expression. Same controlled posture. But today— He wasn’t alone. Vanessa stood behind him, smiling like she had already won something. The teacher cleared his throat nervously. “Ethan… you’re not assigned to this class.” “I know,” Ethan replied flatly. He walked in anyway. Straight toward Mia. Every step made the room more tense. He stopped beside her desk. And placed a paper down. Mia frowned. “What is this?” “Change of seat list,” he said. Mia blinked. “What?” He didn’t answer. Instead, he turned slightly to the class. “From today,” he said calmly, “no one sits near her.” Silence. The entire class froze. Mia shot up slightly. “Excuse me?” Vanessa’s smile dropped immediately. “Ethan, what are you doing?” But Ethan didn’t even look at her. His eyes stayed on Mia. “I don’t trust anyone around you,” he said simply. That hit the room harder than expected. Whispers exploded instantly. “Is he serious?” “Why is he controlling who sits near her?” “Is she important to him or something?” Mia felt heat rise in her chest. Anger. Confusion. Something else she didn’t want to name. “You don’t get to decide that,” she snapped. Ethan finally looked at her fully. For a moment— Just a moment— His expression softened. Then he leaned slightly closer. Only she could hear him. “You don’t understand what’s around you,” he said quietly. Mia lowered her voice. “Then explain it.” A pause. His jaw tightened slightly. “I can’t,” he repeated. That word again. Mia pushed back her chair slightly. “Then stop interfering in my life.” Silence. The class was watching everything like a live drama. Even Vanessa stood frozen. Then Ethan straightened. Cold again. “Fine,” he said. And for a second, Mia thought he would leave. But instead— He did something worse. He sat down. In the empty seat beside her. ⸻ Shockwave The classroom erupted instantly. “What?!” “Did Ethan just sit there?” “Next to Mia?” “Is he insane?” Vanessa’s face tightened so hard it looked like she might lose control. She walked forward immediately. “Ethan,” she said sharply. “Get up.” He didn’t move. “Ethan!” she repeated, louder. Still nothing. Mia stared at him. “Why are you sitting here?” He finally leaned back slightly. “Because,” he said calmly, “I want to.” That answer made everything worse. Vanessa’s voice shook slightly now. “You’re humiliating me.” Ethan glanced at her briefly. “No,” he said. “You’re doing that yourself.” Silence again. Dead silence. Vanessa froze. Then slowly— She turned and walked out. ⸻ Lunch Break Mia tried to escape the attention after class, but it was impossible. Everyone was staring. Whispers followed her like smoke. She ended up at the rooftop—her only quiet place. Or so she thought. “You’re really bad at hiding,” Ethan’s voice came again. Mia turned sharply. He was already there. Of course. “Do you ever leave me alone?” she asked tiredly. “No,” he said honestly. Mia exhaled. “Why?” A pause. Then he stepped closer. The wind moved slightly between them. His expression wasn’t cold this time. Not fully. Something else was slipping through. “I don’t like what I can’t predict,” he said. Mia frowned. “I’m not a problem you need to solve.” Ethan studied her for a moment. Then said quietly: “You were never a problem.” That confused her. “Then what am I?” Silence. Longer this time. His gaze darkened slightly. “You were the only thing I didn’t forget,” he said. Mia’s heart stopped slightly. “What does that even mean?” But before he could answer— The rooftop door slammed open. Vanessa. She was breathing slightly harder than usual. But her expression was sharp. Controlled again. “I knew you’d be here,” she said, eyes locked on Mia. Ethan didn’t turn. Vanessa stepped forward. “I warned you,” she said softly to Mia. “But you didn’t listen.” Mia frowned. “I didn’t do anything to you.” Vanessa smiled faintly. “That’s the problem,” she replied. Then she looked at Ethan. “And you,” she added, voice tightening. “You’re forgetting who was there when everyone else wasn’t.” Ethan finally turned. And for the first time— His expression hardened. Completely. “What do you want, Vanessa?” he asked. She stepped closer. “I want you to stop choosing her over everything you left behind.” Silence. Mia froze. Ethan didn’t respond immediately. Then— He said quietly: “I’m not choosing her.” A pause. Then his eyes shifted slightly toward Mia. “…I’m remembering her.” That was the moment everything broke. ⸻ End of Episode 5 Vanessa’s expression changed completely. Mia stood frozen. And Ethan— Just stood there. Like he had finally said something he wasn’t supposed to say out loud. And now… There was no going back.
