The lie that spread like fire

By morning, Royal Crest High had changed again. But this time, it wasn’t just whispers. It was war. Mia noticed it the second she stepped through the gates. Phones turned toward her instantly. Laughter followed. Then whispers that weren’t even trying to be quiet. “That’s her.” “She’s the one Ethan is obsessed with.” “Did you see the rooftop thing?” “She’s trying to replace Vanessa.” Mia’s steps slowed. Her chest tightened. “What is going on?” she muttered. Stella, walking beside her, looked pale. “Mia… you didn’t see it?” “See what?” Stella hesitated, then slowly turned her phone toward her. Mia’s stomach dropped instantly. A video. ⸻ 📱 The Video The rooftop. Mia and Ethan. Standing too close. His voice—low, calm: “I’m not choosing her… I’m remembering her.” The angle made it worse. It looked intimate. Intentional. Dangerous. The comments under it were already exploding. “HE SAID HE’S REMEMBERING HER???” “THIS IS WHY VANESSA LEFT??” “SHE STOLE ETHAN HART??” “SHE’S A SCHOLARSHIP GIRL???” Mia’s hands went cold. “This isn’t what it looks like,” she said quickly. Stella looked at her. “I know.” But even Stella looked unsure. Because the school didn’t. And Vanessa had already seen it. ⸻ The Hallway Explosion Mia barely made it to her locker before it started. “Homewrecker!” someone shouted. She froze. Another voice laughed. “She thinks she can replace Vanessa Cole?” Mia turned slowly. A group of girls stood there. Elite girls. Rich girls. The kind who didn’t usually notice her. Now they were staring like she was something disgusting. “I didn’t do anything,” Mia said firmly. One of them stepped forward. “Ethan doesn’t just talk like that to random girls.” Mia opened her mouth— But someone else interrupted. Clap. Clap. Clap. Slow. Controlled. Everyone turned. Vanessa Cole. Walking down the hallway like she owned it. Perfect hair. Perfect smile. But her eyes— Cold. Sharp. Dangerous. “So,” Vanessa said sweetly, stopping right in front of Mia, “this is the famous scholarship girl.” Mia didn’t move. “It’s not what you think.” Vanessa tilted her head. “Really? Because it looks exactly like what I think.” She leaned closer. “And trust me,” she whispered, “I always think correctly.” Mia’s voice lowered. “Ethan and I—” “Don’t say his name like you have permission,” Vanessa snapped suddenly. The hallway went silent again. Mia froze slightly. Vanessa smiled again. But this time, it wasn’t sweet. It was poison wrapped in silk. “He had a life before you,” she said slowly. “A real one. One you don’t belong in.” Mia held her ground. “I didn’t ask for any of this.” Vanessa laughed softly. “That’s what they all say before they destroy everything.” Then she stepped back. And said something that made the entire hallway freeze. “I wonder how long it’ll take before everyone knows what really happened to Ethan Hart before he left the country.” Silence. Mia frowned. “What are you talking about?” Vanessa’s smile deepened. “Oh,” she said softly. “You don’t know?” She turned slightly, letting the crowd hear her clearly now. “Maybe I should tell them why he was sent away in the first place.” Mia’s heart dropped. That wasn’t just a threat. That was leverage. ⸻ Ethan Appears Before Vanessa could continue— The atmosphere shifted. Again. Heavy footsteps. The crowd parted instantly. Ethan Hart walked in. Expression unreadable. But his eyes— Sharp. Focused. On Vanessa. “Stop talking,” he said. Vanessa turned to him slowly. “Or what?” Silence. Ethan stopped right in front of her. And for the first time— There was no calm in him. Only control trying not to break. “You’re crossing a line,” he said quietly. Vanessa smiled faintly. “I crossed it a long time ago. You just forgot.” Mia watched silently, heart pounding. This wasn’t the same Ethan. Not the one from class. Not the one from the rooftop. Something heavier stood behind his silence now. Vanessa stepped closer to him. “You don’t want me talking about the past,” she whispered. Ethan didn’t respond. But his jaw tightened. That was enough. Vanessa turned her head slightly toward Mia. “And you,” she said softly, “you should really be careful what you dig into.” Mia frowned. “I’m not digging into anything.” Vanessa laughed once. “You will,” she said. Then she looked at Ethan one last time. “And when she remembers everything… don’t say I didn’t warn you.” She walked away. Slowly. Like she had already won something. ⸻ Aftermath The hallway stayed silent long after she left. Mia turned to Ethan. “Explain,” she said immediately. Ethan didn’t look at her. “Not here,” he replied. Mia stepped closer. “Then when?” A pause. His eyes finally met hers. And for a second— Something softer flickered. “You’re not ready yet,” he said again. Mia’s frustration rose. “You keep saying that!” Ethan exhaled slightly. Then said something quieter. “I’m trying to protect you.” That hit differently. Mia froze slightly. “From what?” she asked. But Ethan didn’t answer. Because he already turned away. Walking off again. Leaving her with silence. And fear. Because now— It wasn’t just about forgotten memories anymore. It was about a truth someone didn’t want her to find. And Vanessa had just confirmed it existed.
