Darkness, the first thing I noticed was how thick and endless it was. It wasn’t just the absence of light it was like the very air had been soaked in shadow. I opened my eyes, but it made no difference. I couldn’t see. My breath came in short, frantic bursts, the coldness biting at my skin like unseen teeth. I was lying on something rough stone.
