My hands shook as I dialed Charles's number. The phone rang once, twice, three times before he picked up.
"Sarah? What's wrong?" His voice was thick with sleep.
"I need to see you. Now." I tried to keep the panic out of my voice, but I could hear it wavering.
An hour later, we were sitting in my car in an empty parking lot, the city lights twinkling in the distance. I told Charles everything – the financial discrepancies, the break-in, the threatening message.
His face grew more serious with each word. When I finished, he was silent for a long moment.
"Sarah," he said finally, his voice low. "I think I know what's going on."
My heart leaped. "You do?"
He nodded grimly. "There have been rumors... whispers in the boardroom at Harmony. Some of the executives have been pushing for a hostile takeover of Elite Realty."
I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. "What? But... why didn't you tell me?"
Charles's eyes flickered away from mine. "I didn't want to worry you. And honestly, I didn't think they'd go through with it. But now..."
"Now what?" I pressed.
He sighed heavily. "Now I'm not so sure. The financial irregularities, the threats... it all fits. They're trying to weaken Elite Realty from the inside."
My mind was reeling. Could it really be true? Was Charles's own company behind all this?
"But you're not involved, right?" I asked, hating the note of uncertainty in my voice.
Charles reached for my hand, his eyes locking with mine. "Sarah, I swear to you, I had no part in this. I love you. I would never do anything to hurt you or your company."
I wanted to believe him. God, how I wanted to believe him. But a tiny seed of doubt had been planted, and I couldn't shake it.
"What do we do now?" I asked.
"We need to be careful," Charles said. "If Harmony is behind this, they'll be watching both of us closely. We should limit our contact for a while, just to be safe."
I nodded, feeling a lump form in my throat. "And the midnight meeting?"
Charles's jaw tightened. "Don't go. It's too dangerous. We'll find another way to handle this."
As I drove home that night, my mind was a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions. I trusted Charles, didn't I? But then why did something about his explanation feel... off?
Without thinking, I found myself dialing Kelvin's number.
"Sarah?" He answered on the first ring. "Are you okay?"
I hesitated for a moment, then made a decision. "Kelvin, I need your help. Can you meet me at the old Westwood Heights site at 11:30 tonight?"
There was a pause on the other end of the line. "Sarah, what's going on?"
"I'll explain everything when I see you," I promised. "Just... please. I need someone I can trust."
As I hung up, I realized with a start that I'd just implied I trusted Kelvin more than Charles. And the scariest part? I wasn't sure if that was a lie.
The old Westwood Heights construction site was eerily quiet as I pulled up at 11:45 PM. The half-finished buildings loomed like skeletal giants against the night sky.
I spotted Kelvin's car parked in the shadows and made my way over. He stepped out as I approached, his face etched with concern.
"Sarah, what the hell is going on?" he asked, pulling me into a tight hug.
The warmth of his embrace caught me off guard, and I found myself clinging to him for a moment longer than necessary. When I pulled back, I saw a flicker of something in his eyes – confusion? Longing?
I pushed the thought aside and quickly filled him in on everything that had happened.
Kelvin listened intently, his frown deepening. "Sarah, this is insane. We need to call the police."
I shook my head. "Not yet. I need to know who's behind this first."
He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Fine. But I'm not letting you face this alone. I'm staying right here with you."
A wave of gratitude washed over me. "Thank you, Kelvin. I don't know what I'd do without you."
As the words left my mouth, I realized how true they were. In the chaos of the past few weeks, Kelvin had become my rock, my confidant. The lines between our fake relationship and real friendship had blurred beyond recognition.
The sound of approaching footsteps jolted us both. We turned to see a figure emerging from the shadows.
My jaw dropped. "Charles?"
He stopped short, his eyes darting between Kelvin and me. "Sarah? What are you doing here? And with my brother?"
"I could ask you the same thing," I shot back, my mind racing. "Did you follow me?"
Charles's face hardened. "I was worried about you. I told you not to come here, and then I see you sneaking off with Kelvin?"
"Hey, back off," Kelvin stepped forward, placing himself slightly in front of me. "Sarah asked me to be here. She needed someone she could trust."
The implication hung heavy in the air. Charles's eyes narrowed. "And she couldn't trust me? Her actual boyfriend?"
"Maybe she had good reason not to," Kelvin retorted.
I watched in horror as the tension between the brothers escalated. This was all going horribly wrong.
"Stop it, both of you!" I yelled, stepping between them. "This isn't helping anything."
But before either of them could respond, a slow clap echoed through the night air.
We all whirled around to see a figure step out from behind a half-built wall. My blood ran cold as I recognized him – Jonathan Graves, one of Harmony Land & Homes' top executives.
"Well, well," he said, a smirk playing on his lips. "Isn't this a touching family reunion?"
"Jonathan?" Charles's voice was a mix of confusion and anger. "What are you doing here?"
Jonathan's smirk widened. "Oh Charles, always so naive. Did you really think we'd let you play both sides forever?"
My head was spinning. "What's he talking about, Charles?"
Charles's face had gone pale. "Sarah, I can explain "
"Oh, I think I can explain better," Jonathan cut in. "You see, Sarah, your darling Charles has been feeding us information about Elite Realty for months. How else do you think we knew exactly where to look for those financial discrepancies?"
I felt like the ground was crumbling beneath my feet. "Charles... is this true?"
He reached for me, his eyes pleading. "Sarah, please. It's not what you think. I was trying to protect you, to keep Harmony from going through with the takeover."
"By betraying me?" I choked out, tears stinging my eyes.
Kelvin stepped forward, his face a mask of fury. "You son of a b***h," he growled at Charles. "I knew you were hiding something, but this?"
Jonathan laughed. "Oh, this is priceless. The noble twin, defending the damsel in distress. Tell me, Kelvin, does Sarah know about your little secret?"
Kelvin froze. "What are you talking about?"
"The real reason you agreed to this little charade," Jonathan said, his eyes glinting. "Your own plans for Elite Realty."
I turned to Kelvin, my heart pounding. "Kelvin? What's he talking about?"
Kelvin's face was a mixture of shame and defiance. "Sarah, I... I was going to tell you. I've been working on a plan to merge our companies, to save Elite Realty from Harmony's takeover."
The world seemed to tilt on its axis. Both brothers had been lying to me, using me for their own ends.
"Well, this has been fun," Jonathan said, pulling out his phone. "But I think it's time we ended this little game. Sarah, you have one hour to agree to Harmony's takeover offer, or every dirty little secret about you and your company goes public."
As Jonathan walked away, I stood there, feeling more alone than I ever had in my life. The two men I thought I could trust had betrayed me, and now my entire world was on the verge of collapse.
With tears streaming down my face, I turned and ran, leaving Charles and Kelvin calling after me. I had no idea where I was going or what I was going to do.
All I knew was that in one hour, everything would change. And I had to decide who, if anyone, I could really trust to help me save everything I'd worked so hard to build.
