Chapter 3: The Plan That Made Everything Worse

530 Words
If there is one universal truth across all worlds, it is this: No plan survives five minutes with me involved. Rayan said we needed a safe place. I heard food. So naturally, we ended up in a tavern. Not a cozy tavern. Not a quiet tavern. A tavern that was: Loud Crowded Full of suspicious-looking people who absolutely noticed my glowing engagement ring “Why is everyone staring?” I whispered. Rayan glanced around calmly. “Because you’re wearing royal engagement magic.” I looked down. “THIS IS A DRESS, NOT A CRIME.” “It’s glowing,” he added. “Oh.” We slid into a corner booth. The table immediately tried to bite me. I screamed. The table apologized. “I hate this world,” I muttered. Rayan smirked. “You’ll get used to it.” “I refuse.” A waitress appeared—green hair, golden eyes, and a smile that felt too knowing. “What’ll it be, lovebirds?” she asked. “We’re not—” “Yes,” Rayan said at the same time. I kicked him under the table. “Ow.” The waitress winked. “Engaged couples get the Truthbrew discount.” “No,” I said quickly. “Absolutely not.” Too late. She set two glowing mugs in front of us. Rayan stiffened. “That’s not tea.” “WHAT IS IT?” I hissed. “Potion that forces honesty.” I froze. “WHY IS THAT LEGAL?” He shrugged. “It’s happy hour.” We sat there. Staring at the mugs. “Don’t drink it,” I warned. “I won’t if you won’t.” Silence. A hooded figure across the room leaned forward. My ring burned. “Rayan,” I whispered, “someone’s watching us.” “I know,” he said quietly. “Three someones. By the door.” The mugs bubbled. The table growled again. “New plan,” I said. “We fake a lovers’ argument.” Rayan blinked. “What?” I grabbed his collar and raised my voice. “HOW DARE YOU GET ENGAGED WITHOUT ASKING ME!” The entire tavern went silent. Rayan, bless his dramatic soul, played along. “YOU FELL ON ME!” “I DID NOT AIM FOR YOU!” “YOU AIMED WITH DESTINY!” Someone sobbed emotionally. The hooded figures hesitated—confused. “NOW!” Rayan shouted. We grabbed the mugs and threw them. The Truthbrew exploded. Magic filled the air. And suddenly, without warning, I blurted: “I THINK YOU’RE ATTRACTIVE EVEN WHEN YOU’RE ANNOYING!” Rayan gasped. “I TRUST YOU WITH MY LIFE!” We stared at each other in horror. “Oh no,” I whispered. The hooded figures drew their weapons. Rayan grabbed my hand. “RUN.” We crashed through the back door, laughter and panic tangled together, hearts racing faster than magic itself. Behind us, a voice echoed: “You cannot escape the bond.” Ahead of us? Dark alleys. Secrets. And feelings neither of us was ready to admit. And somewhere deep inside me, an awful realization formed: This world wasn’t done with us. Not even close.
