Chapter 37. The Tigers

1586 Words

The darkness inside the bathroom felt almost solid. It pressed against Tessa’s chest, stealing the air from her lungs and making every breath feel heavier than the last. Curled into the corner between a marble vanity and the cold wall, she held Leo tightly against her, acutely aware that the little boy in her arms had become a bundle of tightly wound nerves. The most frightening part was that he was not crying. His breathing had become rapid and uneven, and the heat radiating from his skin was almost alarming. Beyond the bathroom door, which remained partially blocked by something heavy in the hallway, the fight continued. The sounds carried no trace of human logic. Wood splintered. Something heavy crashed into a wall. Several creatures panted and snarled somewhere in the darkness.
