It was almost noon before I got up and was ready to leave the house. Mom was in the kitchen, peeling peaches. “I’m making your cobbler,” she said. “Are you coming home for dinner?” “Of course,” I replied. “I’ll be here.” “Where are you going today?” “I’m going to check a few places where I left job applications,” I replied. “Do you still want to do that?” Mom asked. “Yes. I can’t just sit around here all day. I’ve got to be doing something.” “Well, I guess. I thought you wanted to write a book. You used to do a lot of writing.” “I don’t know.
