“You’ve been spending a lot of time with Dean.”
April’s tone, and loaded question, reminded Jay this year autumn felt more like winter. Pretending to be oblivious, he struggled not to avoid his sister’s searching gaze from the other side of the booth. He only looked away to inspect the dark liquid in his paper cup to which he hadn’t added milk, the coffee having arrived late and lukewarm enough. He said nothing.
