Steady

Sarah felt her wolf awaken. The hum in her mind pulsed softly urging her to be calm and surprisingly her wolf listened. Gary and the others crossed the roads and marched towards them. She recognized them as part of her pack, Tory and Jesse. “I’ll be honest, didn’t think I’d see you here so soon,” Gary said. Before she could reply Dean was in front of her, like a shield he stood solid. “Why are you here?” Dean asked. His voice showed no hint of emotion. Gary tore his eyes away from Sarah. “We came to ask you to release yourself from your bond. It’s barely been twenty-four hours and chosen bonds take a while to form.” “Why?” Dean asked. His body is rigid but calm. Gary seemed agitated. “We know you did it to protect her but you and everyone know she deserves to be banished. After what she did last night it’s only proof that she’s a liability.” Dean slowly nodded his head. “I have heard you and my answer is no.” Gary’s face twisted in anger. He knew very well he had to choose his words carefully. “How long do you think you can protect her?” Dean did not attempt to reply so Gary continued. “What happens when your bond doesn’t help her control her wolf and she turns renegade? Will you protect her then? “Yesterday was just one of her many accidents. What happens when the pack decides unanimously against her? It’ll ruin you as the Alpha. You should cut the bond now that you can.” The venom in his words was clear. The people beside him said nothing. They had come as witnesses to his warning. “My answer remains the same. Leave me.” Dean’s reply caused them to be angry. Without another word, Gary turned and left. The message was sent and rejected. A line has been drawn. Gary could have called a one-on-one combat as revenge. A handicapped match if he pleased but he was bent on making sure she was banished. She humiliated him, for a man like Gary, banishment is not enough. Dean took her bags in and she followed. His house on the inside was even more magnificent. It was painted pale blue that matched the dark brown furniture. “Let me show you to your room,” Dean said as he took her upstairs. Her room was huge. “We can move around the house doing our things without triggering the bond. We don’t have to shower together.” He said with a slight smirk on his face. Wait, what did he say? How’d he know? Oh s**t. “Unless…” he smirked again and she felt her face turn red. “That isn’t fair! How come I can’t hear your thoughts too?” Sarah exclaimed in frustration. “You can but I think because of how unstable the bond is you can’t hear me but you can feel what I’m feeling,” Dean replied calmly. He looked very tired. It suddenly dawned on her. “You mean the humming in my head is you?” Dean gave her a short smile. “Take a shower and get dressed then come downstairs to the kitchen to eat. Your dad won’t like the idea of me starving you.” A few minutes later, Sarah came downstairs and tried to navigate her way to the kitchen. Instead, she entered a room that looked like a study. It looked magnificent and had a shelf with books behind the desk. Like being called by a siren the books called to her and she went to go through them. So many classics! Is that crime and punishment? Dorian Gray? Asimov? Damn, New editions, newly released books. This place was like a treasure trove. She didn’t know Dean was a reader. “This is not the Kitchen.” She was startled by his voice. It was always so goddamn firm and strict. “I was just taking a look.” She replied. She wasn’t about to admit to him that she liked his study. He smiled a real honest smile, not a short one or a smirk a real one. This took her off guard. “You can come in here anytime you want.” He turned his back quickly and left. She followed him to the kitchen. He prepared pancakes with syrup. She could feel herself salivating. He loved books and he could cook. How on earth was she supposed to hate this man? Food now, hate later. They sat opposite each other and Sarah kept stealing glances at him. She could tell he noticed but he didn’t say anything. She wanted to know why he chose her. They weren’t close; they weren’t even friends when they were younger, for as long as she’d known him he was uptight. They didn’t mingle in the same circle. She didn’t have a circle, to begin with so why her? Why choose her? Why choose the outcast? “So how does this work?” Sarah asked. She couldn’t bring herself to ask the real question on her mind. “What?” “Does this mean we can’t go anywhere without each other?” “It’s you who can’t go anywhere without me.” She rolled her eyes at his answer. “A bond doesn’t always mean two people are in love. Some best friends choose each other. It’s just an intimate partnership so you don’t have to worry about falling in love with me or anything.” Sarah nodded her head. She understood that part but he forgot to mention the longer you were bonded the stronger the bond was. He continued. “I don’t go out much except when an occasion calls for it so you should be fine” They finished eating, and he offered to wash the dishes, so she decided to take a look around the house. There was a knock at the door, and Sarah went to open it since Dean was busy. “Oh hi is Dean home?” Sarah couldn’t believe it. Standing right in front of her was a ghost. She looked exactly like Dean’s mate who died two years ago in a turf war. “Sorry but is Dean home? Tell him I’ll be quick.” She asked again. “Alice?”
