Mate School was a special kind of hell. From the moment Lila stepped through the front doors of Blackwood High on Monday morning, she felt the weight of a hundred eyes. Some were curious. Some were already judgmental. Most belonged to girls who had spent years competing for Kane Blackwood’s attention and were not pleased to discover that the new stepsister living under his roof was pretty enough to be a threat. She kept her head down, changed her routes between classes three times in the first two days, and sat as far from him as possible in the cafeteria. She told herself the constant ache in her chest was nothing more than stress. She told herself the way her wolf snarled whenever another girl touched his arm was simple irritation at sharing space with someone so overwhelmingly present. It wasn’t. The mate bond did not care about her carefully constructed excuses. It pulsed beneath her skin like a second heartbeat, stronger every time Kane walked past her locker, every time their eyes met across a crowded hallway for even a second. Heat would flare low in her stomach without warning. Her wolf would press against the inside of her ribs, restless and demanding. Lila started leaving classes the moment the bell rang, slipping out side doors, taking the long way around the building just to avoid the possibility of running into him alone. She ate lunch with a small group of girls who were kind enough not to ask too many questions, forced herself to laugh at the right moments, and pretended her hands didn’t shake whenever someone mentioned Kane’s name. By Thursday the tension had become almost unbearable. She stayed late that afternoon to finish a chemistry lab report she had been putting off all week. The classroom was empty by the time she finished the last calculation. Afternoon light filtered through the high windows in long golden bars, catching dust motes that drifted lazily in the air. The hallway outside had gone quiet except for the distant sound of lockers slamming and the occasional burst of laughter from students heading to after-school practice. Lila packed her bag slowly, trying to convince herself she could make it to the parking lot without incident. She had almost reached the door when it clicked shut behind her with deliberate finality. Kane stood there, back against the wood, eyes glowing faintly gold in the slanted light. For a moment neither of them spoke. The air between them felt thick, charged, like the moment before a thunderstorm breaks. Lila’s pulse jumped so hard she was certain he could hear it. Her wolf went completely still, then restless, then desperate, clawing at the inside of her skin for contact she had spent all week denying. “You’ve been avoiding me,” he said. It wasn’t a question. His voice was low, rough around the edges, the same voice that had said “welcome home” in the foyer three nights ago and somehow made it sound like a claim. “I’m trying to have a normal life,” Lila answered, though the words came out softer than she intended and her fingers tightened around the strap of her bag until the leather creaked. He pushed off the door and crossed the room in three long strides. Before she could retreat, his arms caged her against the lab counter, hands planted on either side of her hips, body close enough that she could feel the heat pouring off him in waves. His scent—cedar and rain and pure male—wrapped around her like a living thing. It sank into her lungs, into her blood, into the restless place where her wolf lived. Lila’s breath caught. She tipped her head back to look at him and found his eyes fully gold now, pupils blown wide with something primal and barely restrained. Kane lowered his head until his mouth brushed the shell of her ear. His breath was warm. “Mate,” he growled, the single word rough with something absolute. The claim sank into her bones like a brand. Lila’s knees weakened. Her wolf howled in recognition and surrender so loudly she was half-afraid the entire school would hear it. The sound vibrated through her chest, through her throat, through every nerve ending she possessed. Kane’s hand slid into her hair, tilting her face up with careful strength, and the first kiss was nothing like gentle. It was possession, hunger, and a promise all at once. His mouth moved against hers with an intensity that stole every coherent thought. She made a small, helpless sound against his lips and felt him answer with a low growl that vibrated through both of them. One of his hands stayed tangled in her hair while the other settled at her waist, pulling her flush against him so there was no space left between their bodies. The lab counter bit into the small of her back. The scent of old chemicals and polished wood mixed with Kane’s darker, wilder scent until Lila could barely tell where one ended and the other began. She kissed him back because she couldn’t not. Because the mate bond was a living thing between them now, demanding and relentless, and fighting it felt like trying to hold back the tide with her bare hands. His tongue swept against hers and she opened for him, fingers curling into the front of his shirt hard enough to wrinkle the fabric. Kane made another low sound—half groan, half growl—and pressed closer, one thigh sliding between hers in a way that made heat pool sharply in her stomach. When he finally pulled back, both of them were breathing hard. His forehead rested against hers. His eyes had gone completely gold, bright and unnatural in the afternoon light. A faint sheen of sweat glistened at his temple. Lila could feel the rapid thud of his heart against her own chest. “No one can know,” she whispered, even as her fingers stayed fisted in his shirt and her wolf paced restlessly inside her, already wanting more. Kane’s voice was rough when he answered, scraped raw by whatever had just passed between them. “For now. But not forever, Lila. I won’t be able to pretend this doesn’t exist for long.” She closed her eyes and tried to steady her breathing. The mate bond pulsed between them, warm and insistent and already far too strong. It felt like a living thread stretched tight from the center of her chest to the center of his. Every time he shifted even slightly she felt it tug. “We have to be careful,” she said, the words coming out thinner than she wanted. “If anyone finds out—if the pack finds out—my mom is still trying to find her place here. Your father is still grieving. This could destroy everything.” “I know.” His thumb brushed across her cheekbone, surprisingly gentle for someone who had just kissed her like he meant to devour her. The contrast made her shiver. “I’ll be careful. I’ll keep my distance at school. I’ll smile at other girls and laugh at the right moments and pretend I’m exactly who everyone already thinks I am. But I’m not walking away from this. From you. Do you understand that?” Lila opened her eyes and looked at him. Really looked. The golden boy of Blackwood High was gone. In his place stood something older, something fiercer, something that had recognized her the moment she stepped into the foyer of the mansion and had been waiting for the chance to claim her ever since. The intensity in his gaze should have frightened her. Instead it settled something restless inside her chest even as it ignited something else entirely. “I understand,” she said quietly. Kane held her gaze for another long moment, as if measuring the truth of the words. Then he kissed her again—slower this time, deeper, like he was sealing a promise neither of them had spoken aloud. His hand slid from her hair to the side of her neck, thumb resting against the rapid flutter of her pulse. When he finally stepped back, the loss of his heat was almost physical. Lila’s legs felt unsteady. She braced one hand against the counter and tried to remember how to breathe normally. He watched her gather her things with shaking hands, eyes still faintly gold. “I’ll give you a head start,” he said, voice low. “If we walk out together someone will notice. Go. I’ll wait five minutes.” She nodded, not trusting her voice, and slipped past him toward the door. His scent clung to her clothes, to her skin, to the inside of her mouth. Every step down the empty hallway felt like she was moving through water. By the time she reached the parking lot her lips still tingled and the word “mate” echoed in her head like a heartbeat she couldn’t silence. She sat in her car for a long time before she started the engine, forehead resting against the steering wheel, trying to slow the frantic rhythm of her pulse. The mate bond thrummed steadily beneath her skin, warmer and stronger than it had been that morning. Somewhere behind her, inside the school, Kane Blackwood was waiting five full minutes before he followed, playing the part of the careless playboy for anyone who might still be watching. Lila drove home with the windows down, the cool afternoon air doing nothing to quiet the storm he had woken inside her. She told herself they could keep this secret. She told herself they could be careful. She told herself a lot of things on that drive. None of them felt entirely true. That night she lay in the unfamiliar bed in the Blackwood mansion and stared at the ceiling, the mate bond pulsing like a second heart. Sleep took a long time to come. When it finally did, her dreams were full of gold-flecked eyes and a low, rough voice saying one word over and over against her skin. Mate. And somewhere down the hall, she was certain Kane was lying awake too, staring at his own ceiling, feeling the exact same pull.
