Secret Nights They became experts at secrecy. It started the night after the chemistry lab. Lila lay in her bed on the second floor of the Blackwood mansion, staring at the ceiling, the mate bond pulsing under her skin like a second heartbeat that refused to quiet. Every time she closed her eyes she felt Kane’s mouth against hers again, the heat of his body pinning her to the lab counter, the rough sound of the word “mate” still echoing in her bones. Sleep was impossible. At twelve-thirty she finally gave up, slipped out of bed, and pulled on dark jeans and a soft black sweater. She moved through the silent house like a ghost, avoiding the boards that creaked, and eased the side door open just wide enough to slip through. Kane was already waiting at the edge of the woods. He stood in the shadow of the trees, hands in the pockets of his jacket, eyes faintly gold in the dark. The moment she stepped outside he turned toward her as if he had felt her coming. Neither of them spoke. He simply held out his hand. Lila took it. His fingers closed around hers, warm and sure, and the bond between them flared so strongly her breath caught. He led her deeper into the trees until the lights of the mansion disappeared completely and only moonlight filtered through the branches above them. There, beneath the open sky, the mate bond was finally allowed to burn unchecked. The first time was frantic. Kane backed her against the rough trunk of a wide oak, mouth already on hers, hands sliding under her sweater like he had been starving for the feel of her skin. Lila made a soft, helpless sound against his lips and arched into him. The forest smelled of damp earth and pine and the sharper, wilder scent of him. His teeth grazed the side of her throat—not quite a claiming bite, not yet—and her wolf surged forward so hard her knees nearly buckled. Clothes were pushed aside rather than removed. Hands mapped new territory with urgent need. When it was over they stayed pressed together, breathing hard, foreheads touching, the bond humming between them like a living wire. “We can’t keep doing this,” Lila whispered, even as her fingers stayed curled in his shirt. Kane’s voice was rough. “I know. But I also know I can’t stop.” They met almost every night after that. Sometimes it was the woods. Sometimes it was the old pool house at the far edge of the property, where the air smelled of chlorine and dust and the wide couch was soft enough to lose themselves in. Kane would lock the door behind them and then turn to her with eyes already gold. Some nights the need was sharp and desperate—clothes half-off, mouths searching, bodies moving together like they were trying to crawl inside each other’s skin. Other nights it was slower, almost reverent. Kane would lay her down and map every inch of her with his hands and mouth as if he were memorizing her for a test he couldn’t afford to fail. He whispered the word “mate” against her throat, against the soft skin beneath her ear, against the inside of her wrist, like it was both prayer and claim. Lila learned the exact sound he made when she dragged her nails down his back. She learned the way his eyes softened only when they were alone, the way his voice dropped into something almost tender when he said her name in the dark. At school they barely looked at each other. Lila became a master of careful distance. She changed her routes between classes so often that even she sometimes got lost. She sat with a small group of girls at lunch and forced herself to laugh at the right moments while her wolf paced restlessly inside her every time Kane walked past with his arm around someone else. The other girls still gossiped about him constantly—who he had supposedly slept with over the weekend, which cheerleader he had been seen talking to after practice, how unfair it was that someone could look like that and still be the Alpha’s heir. Lila smiled politely and pretended the jealous twist in her gut meant nothing. She told herself the ache in her chest was simply the price of keeping their secret. Kane played his part even better. He was still the golden boy of Blackwood High—star athlete, student council, the boy every girl wanted. He laughed too loudly in the hallways. He let girls lean against his side between classes. He never once looked at Lila for longer than a second that could be explained away as coincidence. Only she could feel the bond pulling tight whenever their eyes met across a crowded room. Only she could see the way his jaw flexed when another boy stood too close to her locker. The performance was flawless. It was also slowly driving them both insane. One Thursday night in the pool house the careful control finally cracked. They had been careful for almost three weeks. Stolen hours. Quiet exits. No marks left where anyone might see. That night the moon was nearly full and the air outside was cold enough that their breath misted when they first stepped inside. Kane locked the door, turned, and simply looked at her for a long moment. Something in his expression made Lila’s stomach tighten. “I’m going to tell my father soon,” he said quietly. Lila’s heart stumbled. “Kane—” “I can’t keep pretending you’re just my stepsister.” He crossed the small space between them and cupped her face in both hands. His thumbs brushed her cheekbones. “It’s starting to feel like a lie that will choke me if I let it go on much longer. Every time I have to smile at some other girl while you’re standing twenty feet away, it feels like I’m tearing something important out of my own chest.” She covered his hands with hers. “Not yet. Please. My mom is still trying to find her place here. She’s only just starting to feel like she belongs. If this blows up right now… I’m not sure she would survive the fallout. And I’m not sure I would either.” Kane closed his eyes for a second, jaw tight. When he opened them again the gold had faded back to hazel, but the intensity remained. “Okay,” he said finally. “Not yet. But soon, Lila. I mean it. I won’t be able to keep this buried forever.” She nodded and rose onto her toes to kiss him, slow and deep, as if she could seal the promise with her mouth. He answered the kiss with a low sound of surrender and walked her backward until the backs of her knees hit the couch. That night was different—less frantic, more deliberate. Kane took his time. He peeled her sweater off slowly, kissed every newly revealed inch of skin, whispered her name like it was the only word he still remembered. When he finally pushed into her it was with a controlled roll of his hips that made her arch and gasp. He kept his eyes on hers the entire time, gold bleeding back into the hazel, the bond between them burning so brightly she half-expected the room to catch fire. Afterward they lay tangled together under a thin blanket, her head on his chest, his fingers tracing idle patterns along her spine. The only light came from the moon filtering through the high windows, painting silver stripes across their skin. Lila listened to the steady beat of his heart and tried not to think about how fragile this secret had become. “I hate the way they look at you,” Kane murmured after a long silence. “The other girls. Like they’re already measuring how long it’ll take to push you out.” “I can handle it.” “You shouldn’t have to.” His arm tightened around her. “You’re my mate. You shouldn’t have to pretend you’re nothing to me just so the pack stays comfortable.” Lila pressed a kiss to the center of his chest. “We knew this wouldn’t be easy.” “I didn’t know it would feel like this,” he admitted. “I didn’t know it would feel like half of me is walking around outside my body every time you’re not in the room.” She had no answer for that. She simply curled closer and let the bond settle around them like a second blanket. Outside, the forest was quiet. Inside the pool house the air still smelled of s*x and skin and the faint metallic edge of a secret that was growing heavier by the day. They stayed like that until the sky began to lighten at the edges. Kane walked her back to the side door of the mansion just before dawn, kissed her once more in the shadows, and watched until she was safely inside. Lila climbed the stairs on silent feet and slipped into her room without waking anyone. She stood under the hot spray of the shower until her skin turned pink, trying to wash his scent away enough that no one would notice at breakfast. It never fully worked. By the time she sat down at the long dining table that morning, Kane was already there, laughing at something his father had said, the perfect picture of the untroubled heir. Their eyes met for the briefest second across the table. The bond flared. Lila looked down at her plate and forced herself to eat. The secret was still safe. But both of them could feel the edges of it beginning to fray.
