The laughter that had once filled the car faded into uneasy silence as the road disappeared beneath a thick veil of fog. The headlights barely cut through the dense mist, revealing nothing but gnarled trees and an endless, winding path. Alex gripped the steering wheel tighter, his knuckles white. “This doesn’t make sense,” Brandon muttered, peering at the GPS. “We’ve been driving in circles.” Chris leaned forward, squinting through the windshield. “There hasn’t been a single town, a gas station—nothing.” A shiver ran down Daniel’s spine as he glanced outside. The trees loomed taller, their twisted branches clawing at the sky like skeletal fingers. Then, without warning, the car sputtered and jerked to a stop. “No, no, no,” Alex muttered, turning the key in vain. The fuel gauge sat stubbornly at empty. “Great,” Chloe groaned, rubbing her arms. “We’re stranded.” They stepped out into the eerie stillness, their breath visible in the unnaturally cold air. The tree beside them stood ancient and foreboding, its roots sprawling like veins through the earth. A rusted sign dangled from one of its branches, the writing too worn to read. A sudden gust of wind sent leaves spiraling around them, carrying whispers that didn’t belong to the night. Daniel swallowed hard. “I think… we should stay in the car.” No one argued. The weight of the unknown pressed down on them, and as the fog thickened, it felt as though they were being watched
