THE WORST PARTNER EVER
The lecture finally ended.
Elena immediately closed her notebook and stood up.
She needed to get away from Adrian.
Unfortunately, before she could leave, the professor called out.
"Elena. Adrian. stay behind for a moment."
Elena slowly turned around.
Adrian was already looking at her with an amused expression.
"This is your fault", she whispered.
"My fault?" he replied "I didn't ask to be paired with you either.
"Then we're finally agreeing on something."
The professor approached them with a folder in his hands.
"Your project will be worth forty percent of your final grade."
Elena eyes widened.
Forty percent?
The professor continued.
"you'll be researching, preparing, and presenting the project together. I expect both of you to contribute equally."
Elena nodded.
"Understood, sir."
Adrian simple nodded.
"Good. your first meeting should be today."
Elena looked at Adrian.
"Today."
"Yes choose a topic and begin your research."
The professor walked away.
Elena sighed.
"This is going to be a disaster."
Adrian picked up his bag.
"Only if u make it one."
She glared at him.
"You're incredibly annoying."
"And you're incredibly dramatic."
Elena rolled her eyes and walked towards the exit
"Library. four o' clock."
Adrian stopped.
You're giving me order?
"I'm giving you a chance to prove you're not complete useless."
He smiled.
"Four 0' clock it is"
4:00 pm __ University library
Elena sat at a table surrounded by books and note.
She checked the time.
4:05.
No Adrian.
4:15.
still nothing.
she tapped her pen impatiently.
"Of course."
just as she was about to pack her things, a chair was pulled out opposite her.
Adrian sat down.
"Sorry am late."
Elena stared at him.
"You're twenty minutes late."
"I know."
"And?
"And I'm here now."
she took a deep breath.
"Unbelievable."
Adrian looked on the papers in front of her.
"So what topic did you choose?"
"I choose three."
She pushed the papers toward him.
He looked through them.
"These are actually good."
Elena paused.
"Was that a compliment?"
"Don't get used to it."
She almost smiled.
Almost.
They spent the next hour working.
To Elena surprise, Adrian was actually intelligent. He had good ideas, organized his notes quickly and somehow managed to explain complicated things in a simple way.
She found herself watching him.
Then Adrian looked up.
"Why are staring?"
Elena immediately looked away.
"I wasn't."
"You were."
"I was thinking."
"About me?"
She scoffed.
" in your dream."
He laughed quietly.
For the first time, Elena noticed. That is smile wasn't as irritating as she thought.
She quickly shook the thought away.
No.
Absolutely not.
She wasn't going to start liking him.
Not even a little.
As they packed their things. Adrian noticed a photograph sticking out of Elena notebook.
He reached toward it.
Elena quickly grabbed the notebook.
"Don't."
His expression changed.
"I was just __"
"I said don't."
The playful mood disappeared.
Adrian studied her face.
There was something behind her eyes.
Something she clearly didn't want him to know about.
He didn't push.
"Okay."
Elena looked at him, surprised.
"Okay?"
"Yeah I won't ask."
She nodded quietly.
"Thank you."
They walked out of the library together.
Neither of them noticed the girl standing near the entrance watching them.
Her expression hardened when she saw Adrian beside Elena.
She pulled out her phone.
" we have a problem," she said.
Later that night, Elena's phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
You should stay away from Adrian cole.
Elena frowned.
Another message appeared.
You have no idea wat you're getting yourself into.
She stared at the screen
Who was this?
And why did they know about Adrian?
Before she could reply, Another message appeared.
Ask him what happened last year.
Elena's heart skipped.
She slowly looked at the dark window beside her.
For the first time since arriving at west bridge university she wondered if her new beginning wasn't actually a beginning at all.
Maybe she had walked into someone else unfinished story.
TO BE CONTINUED.
