4 Returning to Nana's house, Leah found the entryway and dining room already packed with people who had come to bring their condolences and be with the family as they began to sit shiva. She was surprised to find so many people milling about in her grandmother's home, standing around in groups holding plates of food. "What is this, Nana? How did they all get in?" Leah's grandmother took off her coat and handed over her purse. "I left the house open, dear. That's what one does when you sit shiva. The door should never be locked. People will come and go on their own. Besides, the caterers needed to get things ready."
