CHAPTER 30TOLBERT AND PAL President Tolbert kept the delegations from PAL waiting for over an hour. Albert, the President’s secretary, watched with increasing concern as Baccus Matthews twisted in his seat, doing little to disguise his growing impatience. “It won’t be long now, Mr. Matthews,” he said with a ringing voice. “The President is a busy man these days,” he added, glancing nervously toward the door of the President’s office. Matthews huffed and looked skeptical. “This is just another Big Man’s game,” he mumbled. “Always keep you waiting just to let you know who’s running the show, who’s in control.” When they finally were admitted, Matthews, Amos Sawyer and Che Cheapoo brushed by the secretary with enough force to disturb several loose papers, which fluttered to the floor.
