CHAPTER 40MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
The odor of burning wood, tar, and trash hung in the streets like an omnipresent foul spirit. A thin, gray cloud of smoke drifted slowly over the US Embassy and floated over the grounds like a miasmic fog. Craig and Darius waited in their car for the marine guard to complete his examination of their IDs. The guard had seen them many times before, knew who they were, but once things went on emergency alert, everyone went by the book no matter how familiar you were.
The guard handed them back their ID badges, smiled and saluted smartly. Craig touched his right eyebrow in a mock salute and drove onto the Embassy grounds and around to the employee parking spaces.
