CHAPTER 43FREETOWN Once we crossed the border, I called the tower at Freetown. There was no contact. I tried again, then again and again. Finally, a voice hailed me back. I told him that we were inbound from Monrovia with a wounded passenger who needed medical assistance right away. The tower operator said that there were no emergency vehicles available, then he informed me in a formal voice that the tower would be closed in thirty minutes. It was getting dark. Lights were beginning to spring up from below. I told the operator that we were only about forty-five minutes out and that it was an emergency.
