ONLY WHEN SHE PULLED up at the vet’s did it occur to Melissa that she didn’t need to be there. She was not the only police officer left in Oakhurst, there was Constable Johnson. If she had thought to change the phone at the station so it diverted to her colleague, who was uninjured, she would not have got the call and would still be asleep. She thought briefly of calling Adrian, so he could take over from her, but that seemed pointless.
