38 Melissa was looking forward, longingly, to an end to her day. She was only about ten minutes outside of Oakhurst, having dropped Thomas Greene off at the main station in Branton, when the phone in her pocket began ringing. She started to take her hand off the wheel, so she could get the phone out, but quickly thought better of it. As confident as she was in her ability to control the car, and as carefully as she was driving, she couldn’t help remembering the sudden appearance of the car that had hit her on the way out of the village. If another car were to appear, it was doubtful that she would be able to avoid a collision with only one hand on the wheel. “Would you mind?” she asked of Zack, who had been staring out the window next to him, as she lifted her hip in a clear invitation.
