Chapter 2 Lone Survivor

1578 Words
Nina's POV. “Nina, honey? Are you okay there?” Mom’s voice was anxious and it made me want to open the door and hug her. I pulled the cover over my head and buried my face deeper into the pillow. “I’m okay, Ma I just… Please just leave me be. ” It has been hours since that horrible event at the mating ceremony. Days since Marcus had dumped me and then muttered something about a threat that I need to be aware of. The fact was I had not gone to meet him at midnight. How could I believe anything that he would say after what he had done? Mom sighed. “Ok honey, I will see you later. ” I realised she has walked away from my life. Once more the house became quiet and I was left to my own company. This led to the question: how could it have all gone so wrong? This was to be the happiest day of my life. However, in this case, it was more like the end of the world to me. I suppose I must have dozed off, for the next thing I remembered was waking up with a start at a shriek. I opened my eyes and my heart beat quickly, I thought maybe I had dreamt it. Then it occurred to me to listen to it once again. And again. With it more screams arose and howling of pain and rage. “What’s happening?” I asked to get out of bed. It was then that I sniffed it. I think it was the smell of my impending doom. Smoke. Thick and choking, creeping under my door. This was panic and, with a wide swing of my arm, I flung open the door of my bedroom. The hall was rather smoky so it was difficult to either see through the smoke and/or breathe. "Mom!" I yelled, coughing. "Dad! Where are you?" No answer. Only more cries from outside. I tripped and fell down the stairs and held my mouth with my hand using my shirt. I stepped outside, the front door was ajar and I could see fire several metres away. The pack which we belonged to was under threat. When I came out I fully realised what was going on, warriors that I did not know attacked my packmates slashing and biting. Bodies littered the ground. Atmosphere of the battle was saturated with the smell of blood and danger. “Nina!” The sound of her name called by Sarah could be heard from the noise. She was running towards me: her eyes were full of terror. ‘Sarah!’ I screamed, holding her arm. ‘What is going on?’ She looked at me and simply shook her head while crying. ‘They are unexpected!’ one of the attackers could be heard screaming. ‘They are killing all of us!’ A howl was heard from close by and both of us had a start. They say you always fear the wolf that’s closest, in this case, a massive grey wolf was charging straight at us with its mouth open showing its teeth. ‘Run!’ I shouted, shoving Sarah forward, we had to get out of there. We ran towards the woods, avoiding fights and jumping over pack members on the ground. I coughed and gasped for air. My lungs were on fire from the smoke and the effort I was putting into moving. “We need to shift!” Sarah said in between panting. I just nodded thinking that I am willing to let the wolf in me come out and play. We never got the chance, before a black wolf with bared teeth and flashing eyes sprang out before us. Sarah screamed. I froze, terrified. The wolf’s eyes met mine, or rather my reflection in them. That was the precise moment when I realised that we were going to die. But then a most curious thing occurred. The wolf hesitated. It swivelled its head and looked at me as if it were lost. “Sarah run!” I whispered with fear in my voice as my eyes remained fixed on the wolf. "But-" This one: ‘’Lassie, run and get help!’’ I heard the sound of her bare feet leave as she fled further into the trees. The wolf still had not pounced. It just. . . stared at me. Gradually, stealthily I began to retreat. The wolf advanced forward one step. “Nice wolf,” I whispered and raised my hands not to be considered a threat. “Good wolf. You are not going to eat me, correct?” It flinched at the sound of my voice and its ears went up. Was it. . . listening to me? A yell which came from behind made the wolf lift his head up. Before I could do anything I saw it jump forward. I screamed, convinced I was dead, or at least that this must be the end of me. But instead of turning on me, the wolf simply tackled me to the ground, and then huffed over me, as if to guard me. The second wolf that was brown in colour also started to advance towards us. The black wolf growled, standing in front of the man and aiming its attack towards me. The two wolves fought each other hard and the sound of their grinding teeth and snarling fangs could be heard. I quickly backed away and my heart raced. What was happening? I wondered why the black wolf would protect me. The fight ended quickly. Thus the black wolf triumphantly stood over the brown one. Looking back at me with its beautiful golden eyes. We simply looked at each other for what seemed to be a long time. Then, to my uttermost surprise, the wolf started changing. Instead of the wolf there stood a man, a man of above average height, wide shouldered with black hair and of course the golden eyes. He was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen in my life and at the same time the most terrifying thing. “Who . . . who are you?” And now, my voice trembled. He smiled but that was not a smile that would make one loosen up or feel comfortable in the company of the man. It was predatory. “I know who I am, my name is Alpha Killian from the Crescent Moon Pack, and you, little wolf, are coming with me.” Before I could open my mouth to answer him, the man sprang at me; there was a jerk at my throat, and then nothing. The next thing I saw was that I was in an unfamiliar house. My head was pounding, and my muscles screamed with soreness all over. Memories flooded back. The attack. The fighting. The black wolf that had defended me at one point only to abduct me. I lifted my head off the pillow and the first thing that came into my mind was that I had to get out of there. Where was I? Where was my pack? The door opened and this tall muscular man stepped into the room, he was none other than Alpha Killian. That was why I was even more frightened seeing him during the daylight. “Good you’re awake,” he said, it was clear that he had a deep tone to his voice. ‘Where am I?’ I asked angrily. Where is my pack; His face remained impassive. “You are in the territory of Crescent Moon Pack now And your pack… there were no more survivors, I am afraid. ” The ground seemed to turn on its axis. No survivors? That couldn't be right. Mom, Dad, Sarah. . . They could not all have disappeared, some of them must still be around. “You are lying,’ I told him, moving my head from side to side. “All of them can’t be dead. ” Killian's expression softened slightly. “Sorry little wolf I lied to you but it is the truth – you are the only one. ” Tears filled my eyes as reality sank in. I was alone. Everyone I'd ever known or loved was gone. "Why?" I choked out. "Why did you attack us? Why did you kill them all?" Killian sat on the edge of the bed, his eyes never leaving mine. "That's a long and complicated story. One that you're now a part of, whether you like it or not." I wiped my eyes, anger replacing my grief. "What's that supposed to mean?" He reached out, brushing a strand of hair from my face. I flinched away from his touch. "It means, little wolf, that your life as you knew it is over. From now on, you belong to me." My blood ran cold at his words. What did he mean, I belonged to him? What was he going to do with me? As if reading my thoughts, Killian smiled that predatory smile again. "Don't worry. I have big plans for you, Nina. Very big plans indeed." He stood up and walked to the door. Just before leaving, he turned back to me. "Rest up. You're going to need your strength for what's coming next." The door closed behind him, leaving me alone with my fear and grief. What had I gotten myself into? And more importantly, how was I going to get out of it?
