Chapter NineWilliam ‘Willie’ Langford was the disinherited nephew of the Stamford clan. The bastard son of a younger brother, the family had kept the boy at arm’s length by shipping him off to the best schools, which infused the young lad with the pretentions that he was owed even more. He wanted his cut of the family fortune and refused to hear there was no longer any fortune to cut. The family mausoleum was the only true piece of property left that he could have any claim on, and as traditionally the grounds went to the oldest son—and only officially recognised offspring were permitted to be buried in the family plot—even this was tenuous.
