📖 CHAPTER 5: The Signature That Doesn’t Belong Elara didn’t sleep again. Not because she was scared. Because she was thinking too much. And in Cole Enterprises, thinking too much felt like a mistake. ⸻ By morning, she had made a decision. If no one would explain anything to her… She would find out herself. ⸻ The building was quieter before official hours. Less movement. Less watching eyes. That made it easier. Or so she thought. ⸻ Elara slipped into the corridor she wasn’t officially allowed to enter. The “records section.” A small sign read: AUTHORIZED ACCESS ONLY She stared at it for a second. Then whispered to herself: “I’ve already been illegally employed. Might as well continue.” And pushed the door open. ⸻ Inside, everything was digital. Too many screens. Too many locked folders. But one thing stood out. A central terminal. Still logged in. Elara walked closer slowly. Heart beating slightly faster now. “This is a terrible idea,” she muttered. Then sat down. ⸻ The system asked for clearance. She hesitated. Then tried something random: Her name. Denied. She tried again. Still denied. Then a thought crossed her mind. That contract. The one she never remembered signing properly. She typed her name exactly as it appeared there. The screen paused. ⸻ Then— ACCESS GRANTED Elara froze. “…what?” The screen changed instantly. Her file opened. But not just one. Multiple. Too many. Her brows pulled together. “This can’t be right…” ⸻ Page after page. Documents with her name. But different signatures. Different dates. Different versions of her agreement. Some she didn’t even recognize. Her throat tightened slightly. “This is… not one contract.” A pause. Then she saw something that made her go still. A header: SUBJECT: ELARA VANCE – CONTINGENCY ASSET Her breath stopped. “What does that even mean?” ⸻ Behind her— A sound. Elara spun immediately. Nothing. Empty room. Just silence. Too clean. Too quiet. She stood slowly. “…hello?” No answer. But the system screen flickered. Once. Then again. Like something had noticed her. ⸻ Suddenly— The door opened. Fast. Elara stepped back instantly. Adrian Cole stood there. Expression unreadable. But his eyes went straight to the screen. Then to her. And something in his gaze sharpened. “You’re not supposed to be here,” he said again. Elara raised her hands slightly. “That seems to be your favorite sentence.” No reaction. He walked in. Closed the door behind him. Then locked it. ⸻ Elara’s stomach dropped slightly. “…why did you lock it?” He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he walked to the terminal. Looked at the screen. Silence stretched. Then he said quietly: “You accessed a restricted file.” Elara crossed her arms. “I accessed my file.” A pause. Then— “That’s not your file,” he said. ⸻ Elara frowned. “It literally has my name on it.” He turned slightly. And for the first time, his expression looked different. Not cold. Not distant. But controlled. Carefully controlled. “That doesn’t mean it belongs to you,” he said. Silence. ⸻ Elara stepped forward. “Then explain it.” Adrian didn’t respond immediately. His eyes stayed on the screen. Then he said: “You’re not the only Elara Vance in the system.” That made her freeze. “…what?” He turned fully now. And said it clearly: “Your identity was duplicated.” ⸻ Silence hit the room harder than anything before. Elara’s voice dropped. “That’s impossible.” Adrian didn’t argue. Just continued: “And someone used that duplicate to sign multiple agreements under your name.” Her chest tightened. “So I didn’t sign anything?” A pause. Then— “You signed nothing that should exist,” he said. ⸻ That should have made her feel better. It didn’t. It made it worse. ⸻ Because now the question wasn’t did I sign it? It was: Who is using my identity? ⸻ Elara looked at the screen again. The word still stood there: CONTINGENCY ASSET “What does that mean?” she asked again, quieter now. Adrian’s jaw tightened slightly. He didn’t answer immediately. Then finally: “It means someone planned for you to be here.” A pause. “And not for a job.” ⸻ Elara stared at him. Something shifted in her chest. Fear. Curiosity. Anger. All mixing together. “So I’m part of a plan I don’t even know about.” Adrian looked at her. And for a moment, something almost like hesitation crossed his expression. Then he said: “Yes.” ⸻ Silence. Long. Heavy. Different. ⸻ Elara exhaled slowly. Then said the only thing that made sense in her mind: “Then I’m leaving.” Adrian didn’t stop her. Didn’t move. Just said quietly: “You can try.” A pause. Then— “But now you know enough to be a problem.” ⸻ Elara stopped at the door. Looked back. “What does that mean?” Adrian’s eyes met hers. Calm. Serious. Final. “It means,” he said, “you’re no longer just involved.” A beat. “You’re necessary.” ⸻ And somewhere deep inside the system— Another update triggered. CONDITION MET: SUBJECT AWARENESS INCREASED PHASE 2 INITIATED
