⸻ 📖 CHAPTER 3: The Rules Start Breaking Elara didn’t sleep at Cole Enterprises. Not because she didn’t want to. Because she wasn’t allowed to leave. They called it “temporary security arrangement.” She called it something else in her head. Prison with good lighting. ⸻ The room they gave her was too clean. Too quiet. Like nobody actually expected her to stay long enough to get comfortable. She sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the wall. Her phone had been checked. Her bag inspected. Even her ID photocopied. And no one had explained why. Only one thing kept repeating in her mind: You don’t get to leave. Adrian’s voice. Calm. Certain. Annoyingly unforgettable. ⸻ A knock interrupted her thoughts. She stood quickly. Too quickly. “Who is it?” A pause. Then a familiar voice: “Breakfast.” Elara frowned. “I didn’t order anything.” The door opened anyway. A staff member placed a tray inside. Luxury food. Too much for one person. Then left immediately. No explanation. No eye contact. Just silence again. ⸻ Elara stared at the food. “This is insane,” she muttered. Then she noticed something. A small envelope beside the tray. No name. Just a seal. Cole Enterprises. She hesitated. Then opened it. ⸻ Inside was a single line: “Rule 1: You eat what is provided. You do not leave your assigned area.” Elara froze. “…what?” She looked around the room like it might explain itself. It didn’t. Her chest tightened. “This is not a job,” she whispered. ⸻ At the same time, somewhere else in the building… Adrian Cole stood in front of a glass board covered in documents. His assistant spoke carefully: “She’s still refusing to cooperate fully.” Adrian didn’t look up. “She will adjust.” A pause. Then the assistant added: “Your cousin is asking questions about her.” That made Adrian stop. Slowly turn. “Which one?” A faint hesitation. “…Miss Selene Cole.” Silence. The temperature in the room dropped slightly. Adrian’s expression didn’t change. But something in his tone sharpened: “Tell her to stay out of it.” ⸻ Back in Elara’s room, the door opened again. This time, without knocking. Elara stood immediately. And froze. The woman from yesterday. The elegant one. Still smiling. Still wrong somehow. “You’re eating well,” she said casually. Elara narrowed her eyes. “Do you always walk into people’s rooms uninvited?” The woman smiled wider. “Only the ones I’m curious about.” She walked in like she owned the space. Then looked at the tray. “Good. You followed the first rule.” Elara blinked. “First rule?” The woman tilted her head. “Oh, they didn’t tell you?” A pause. Then she added lightly: “Cole Enterprises doesn’t hire employees. It assigns roles.” Elara felt something cold settle in her stomach. “That doesn’t make sense.” “It doesn’t have to,” the woman said simply. Then she leaned closer. Lower voice: “You should leave while you still can.” Elara frowned. “I thought I wasn’t allowed to leave.” The woman laughed softly. “Oh no.” A pause. Then, almost amused: “You can leave.” Elara stiffened. “…then why did they bring me here?” The smile faded slightly. “Because someone specifically asked for you.” Silence. That hit differently. ⸻ Before Elara could respond, footsteps approached outside. Fast. Controlled. Familiar. The door opened again. Adrian Cole walked in. And the atmosphere shifted instantly. The woman straightened slightly. “Adrian,” she greeted. He didn’t look at her. His eyes went straight to Elara. “Leave,” he said. The woman blinked. “Excuse me?” “Not you,” he replied flatly. Silence. Then she smiled again—but colder this time. “Oh. Interesting.” She glanced at Elara once more. Like she was storing information. Then left. Quietly. Too quietly. ⸻ Elara exhaled slowly. “That woman is weird,” she said. Adrian didn’t respond. He stepped closer to the table. Looked at the untouched food. “You didn’t eat.” Elara frowned. “I’m not a pet.” A pause. Then— “You are not here by accident,” he said. That made her look up. “Then explain it.” Silence. He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he placed a small card on the table. Her name printed on it. Different from the contract. New. Authorized. Access badge. Elara stared at it. “What is this?” “Your clearance level.” Her eyes widened slightly. “I don’t want clearance levels. I want to leave.” His gaze stayed steady. “You will.” A pause. “But not yet.” That answer made her angry. “You don’t get to decide that for me.” For the first time— Something shifted in his expression. Not emotion exactly. But attention. Like she had said something worth remembering. ⸻ A long silence followed. Then he said quietly: “If I let you leave now… you won’t survive what’s outside this building.” Elara laughed once. “This place is starting to sound more like a threat every second.” He didn’t deny it. Instead, he turned slightly toward the door. Then added: “Someone is watching you already.” That stopped her completely. ⸻ Elara’s voice lowered. “…who?” Adrian didn’t answer immediately. Then: “That’s what I’m trying to find out.” He paused. Then looked at her again. And for the first time— Less cold. More serious. “And until I do… you stay where I can see you.” ⸻ Silence. Not comfortable. Not safe. Just heavy. ⸻ Outside the building, unseen by both of them… A phone screen lit up. One message sent: “She’s inside.” Then another reply came instantly: “Good. Let the contract do its work.”
