Chapter 10: The Trek BeginsSue Trenton was washing the evening dishes when she looked out the kitchen window and saw Marika ride in on her horse Ginger. The surprise was seeing the second horse loaded with supplies as though Marika was going on a long journey. Sue wondered why Marika would start for the city where she would attend a different school so early, and, if not, why all the supplies?
Why not just take the train? She decided to go outside and welcome her. By the time she had dried her hands and walked out there, Andy and Dickon were already there helping her with all the equipment.
“Hello, Mistress Trenton,” Marika said as she walked up. “I'm sorry to show up with everything without a warning, but Mama refuses to let me stay at The Haven anymore.”
