The quiet over the battlefield was more nerve-wracking than the thunder of war.
Across the valley, in the center of Malakor’s camp, a massive red circle illuminated the night sky. High, eerie chanting echoed through the trees, vibrating through the cold night air.
My Sun Wolf instincts flared with immediate, intense alarm.
"Killian," I whispered, my hand tightening around the hilt of my sword. "Look at the sky."
The dark clouds above Malakor’s camp were swirling into a massive vortex, turning a deep, sickly shade of crimson. The smell of copper and burning flesh grew so strong it made my throat ache.
"They are performing a mass blood sacrifice," Killian said grimly, his jaw clenching. "They are slaughtering their own wounded to power a forbidden dark spell."
Up on the northern tower, Silas called down to us. "Queen Lyra! The ground near the eastern wall is cracking!"
Before I could respond, a violent earthquake shook the entire valley.
Deep, glowing red fissures tore across the earth, stretching from Malakor’s camp straight toward the eastern foundation of the palace walls. The heavy stone ramparts, built centuries ago, began to crumble as the dark magic rotted the mortar holding the stones together.
With a deafening crash, a fifty-foot section of the eastern wall collapsed, sending tons of stone tumbling into the moat below.
A massive breach was opened.
"Charge!" Malakor’s voice echoed across the valley, sinister and triumphant. "Slaughter everyone inside! Bring me the heads of the High King and Queen!"
Over eight hundred dark warriors and blood sorcerers surged forward, ignoring the drawbridge entirely as they rushed toward the massive gap in the eastern wall.
"Defend the breach!" Silas screamed, leading his Midnight warriors down the stone stairs toward the courtyard.
"Shadow Lycans, retreat into the inner courtyard!" Killian commanded. "We bottle them up in the breach!"
We sprinted back across the drawbridge into the castle just as the horde reached the collapsed eastern wall.
The battle had shifted from a controlled siege into a brutal, chaotic free-for-all inside the very heart of the Midnight Pack palace.
