"Celia" I scream happily and run to embrace her.
I see Maddy standing awkwardly to the side. As I turn to her there is an awkward silence before I decide a friendly handshake it the right course to take. Maddy promptly brushes my outstretched hand away and gives me a quick hug before I step back and introduce myself and Gex.
Celia gives Maddy a hug before turning to Gex and beginning a deep conversation that I can only conclude is about the productions of cheetos.
"Hi Maddy" I begin tensly.
"Hi" Maddy's reply seems stiff and uneasy and I worry how we will ever be easy with each other. Like with Celia and I.
"So," Maddy begins to talk again "what books do you like" I cringe at the question, what book? Such a forced ice breaker.
"Pride and Prejudice"
"Oh my god" responds Maddy "That is my all time favorite!"
"Really?!" and I launch deep into a deep conversation with her, about the relationship between Mr and Mrs Bennett and their life style.
By lunch time all I want to do is tear up my copy of P and P. I feel sick at the thought of discussing one more fact about Elizabeth Bennett that makes her Maddy's role model for life. I don't think Maddy and I are meant to be. She looks nice enough. Long blond hair, perfectly conditioned and flowing, hands petite and nails manicured. Her walk is a glide as she scales the shops, on the subject of shopping, she shops religiously. It seems an unhealthy obsession in my opinion. I am pretty sure she doesn't like me at all anyway. Although at the end of the day she gives me her number and says she looks forward to seeing me again.
That's not happening. Not on my watch.
I think I should mention just how clueless Gex is. He doesn't even suspect that it was a date for me. He just is completely oblivious, the day wasn't completley wasted though, I got a really cute tank top and a new phone case. Besides, Celia and I can just laugh about all of this later.
