Military Academy

Due to the ongoing conflict between Humans and the Dalki, every individual was mandated to attend military school for two years upon turning 16. Despite the current peaceful interlude between the two races, tensions remained high, and many anticipated that hostilities could resume at any moment. News of provocations and skirmishes between the races was a daily occurrence, keeping the threat of war ever-present. David rushed to the restroom before meeting Sergeant Griff, his bladder uncomfortably full from all the water he had consumed. As David stepped outside, he encountered an unexpected development. A new notification appeared: Your body is exposed to direct sunlight You are affected by the sunlight All stats will be reduced by half while in the sunlight Instantly, David felt an overwhelming sense of sluggishness. His body felt as if he had just completed a 5k run, with his limbs growing heavy and unwieldy. He checked his status and confirmed that not only had his stats been halved, but his HP had also been significantly reduced. HP 5/5 Strength 5/5 Stamina 5/5 Agility 5/5 “What kind of drawback is this!” David thought. Then a new notification appeared: You have received a new Daily quest: Avoid direct sunlight for 8 hours Reward: 5 David’s mood lifted slightly upon seeing the new daily quest. Unlike the water challenge, this was manageable by simply staying indoors. If the system functioned like in games, accumulating 100 Exp points would allow him to level up and improve his stats. So, receiving more daily quests was advantageous for him. “What are you doing walking so slowly! The School will eat you alive if you carry on like that!” Griff shouted. David finally reached a large bus parked outside his house. As he entered, he saw it was already filled with students his age, none of whom he recognized, indicating they came from different schools. David took the only available seat at the front of the bus. Stats have returned to normal As soon as David boarded the bus and avoided direct sunlight, his stats returned to normal, and he felt rejuvenated. "Well, at least it seems to be only direct sunlight." The students chatted excitedly until Sergeant Griff boarded the bus, causing an immediate hush. Griff announced, "Alright, it’s time for us to head to the military academy." The bus set off, and the atmosphere turned silent. Whenever a student spoke, Griff would glance their way, prompting them to fall silent without him needing to say a word. About 10 minutes into the journey, David received another message: A substance in the air has been detected You are feeling sleepy Resistance +1 David found the message odd and noticed that most students were either asleep or drowsy. His own eyelids grew heavy. Your resistance to the substance has increased Resistance +1 Suddenly, loud footsteps approached, and Sergeant Griff loomed over him. "Looks like a few of you managed to resist the sleeping gas. We’ll just have to bag you. A black bag was thrown over David’s head, obscuring his vision. As the gas seeped through, David drifted off into a deep sleep. The next moment, David felt a splash of cold water hit his face, causing him to wake up abruptly. His eyes snapped open to reveal green grass beneath him. He and several other students began to sit up and take in their surroundings. They were now in an unfamiliar, expansive open field with a total of 200 students. The place was strikingly different from anything they had known—a futuristic city with advanced technology that had not yet been shared with the outside world. Giant robots were moving crates, flying ships zipped through the air, and levitating trains sped along tracks. The advanced technology was a result of human advancements after the first war with the Dalki Race, where they had salvaged and adapted alien technology for military use. David’s awe was interrupted when he noticed a device strapped to his wrist. It resembled a digital watch but displayed nothing on its screen. “That wristband is your lifeline,” Sergeant Griff explained. “It identifies you as a student here, allows you to access certain areas, and manage various needs. It also shows your power level as a single number when not in use.” David gritted his teeth and clenched his fist. It seemed that, despite the new environment, some aspects of his life would remain unchanged. “Now, we’ll start with the level test,” Griff announced with a grin. “Good luck to all of you!” When abilities were first introduced to humanity, it quickly became clear that some were vastly more powerful than others, leading to the establishment of a power level system. This system ranged from Level 1, the weakest, to Level 8, the strongest, with each level further divided into sublevels from 1.1 to 1.9. Abilities could be acquired in two main ways. During the war with the Dalki Race, people began to share their abilities with the public through "ability books," which detailed how to gain these powers. Generally, books covering levels 1 to 5 were available to the public, while higher-level books were reserved for giant corporations and the military. The second way to gain abilities was through being an Original—those who discovered their powers independently and passed them down through their families. Originals often possessed abilities beyond Level 8, which were not publicly measured. David had always been a Level 1 due to his lack of resources and family support. He had never been able to afford an ability book and had no family abilities to inherit. Seeing his power level displayed as Level 1 on his wristband, David noted that all other students’ wristbands also showed Level 1. This uniformity suggested that the level test might reveal everyone’s starting power level, or there was another explanation for the consistency. Griff stood in front of the students, calling names in groups of five to be transported for their tests. David initially hoped this might be his chance to change his ability level, but his optimism faded quickly when he received a new notification: You are being hit by direct sunlight call stats will be halved David couldn’t gauge how good 10 strength, 10 agility, and 10 stamina would be under normal conditions, but given how he felt now, it seemed these stats should be impressive. However, with his stats halved, he felt extremely weak and sluggish, making the situation even more challenging. His body felt extremely hot, and he was sweating profusely. David was grateful he had drunk a lot of water beforehand; otherwise, he would have been severely dehydrated. "Hey, are you okay?" a stranger standing next to David asked. The stranger’s name was Vorden. He had slick blonde hair, hazel green eyes, and a chiseled face with a sharp jawline. Standing at 6 foot 2 inches, he was noticeably taller than David, who was 5 foot 11. This was the kind of person David would usually avoid; people like Vorden attracted a lot of attention, which David disliked. "If you want, I can call someone for help?" Vorden offered. "It’s okay, I’m just a little nervous about the testing," David replied, trying to ignore his exhaustion and stand up straight. Vorden looked David up and down. David was quite skinny for his age, with minimal muscle, and at that moment, he looked particularly weak. Vorden assumed David might be the type who got bullied in school and was nervous about the test. If he received a Level 1 rating, he might face similar issues here. "Well, don’t be. I’m pretty strong, you know. If anyone bothers you, just come to me for help," Vorden said with a smile. Though David usually didn’t get along with overly positive people, he found it hard to dislike Vorden. Reflecting on his time at school, David realized he hadn’t really connected with anyone. David hesitated for a moment before shaking Vorden’s hand. It was the first time someone had treated him this way, though David suspected it wouldn’t last once his ability level was revealed. For now, he was willing to enjoy the moment. "My name’s David," he said, returning Vorden’s handshake. Use of ability had been detected The ability had been rejected David quickly withdrew his hand, noticing the system’s notification about Vorden trying to use his ability. Vorden appeared puzzled but didn’t react further. "You," Vorden said. "What’s your ability?" David hesitated, weighing whether to reveal the truth. Ultimately, he decided to see Vorden’s reaction. "I don’t have the ability." Vorden’s puzzled expression disappeared, as if David’s answer had resolved his curiosity. Before Vorden could respond further, Griff made an announcement. "Will the students, David Sol, Vorden Blade, Peter Chuck, Layla Munrow, and Erin Heley, please come to the front to take your test."
