-While on the road-

“You feel it too…right? Gray…what if…your childhood friend…is a…”
The thick, heavy silence of the town car’s leather-lined interior wraps around them the moment the doors seal shut and the driver pulls smoothly away from the curb. The city lights of Toronto streak past the tinted windows in a blur of neon gold and deep shadows, casting fractured patterns across Gray’s tightly clenched jaw.
The second the partition divides the front and back cabins, Gray snaps his head toward her, the carefully maintained mask of calm completely shattering.
"Is a what, Gabby?" Gray’s voice drops into a harsh, fierce whisper, the protective fury he’s been swallowing all evening finally breaking the surface. He reaches out, his large hands gripping her trembling shoulders as he searches her pale, terrified face. "What the hell was that back there? The spoon-tapping? The way you practically bolted out of your skin? Don't you dare sit there and pretend everything is fine. What does Fernando have to do with this?"
Gabriella’s breath hitches, tears finally spilling over her lashes as the terrifying reality crashes down on her all over again. She opens her mouth, her voice trembling so violently she can barely string the syllables together.
"He's not just running a corporation, Gray," she whispers, the words tasting like ash on her tongue. "Dalina... she found the files. The offshore accounts, the suppressed records, the logistics. The Blakes... they're a syndicate. An international crime syndicate, Gray. Arms trafficking, enforcement, all of it."
Gray’s breath catches, his hands freezing on her shoulders. For a split second, sheer, unadulterated disbelief flashes across his eyes, quickly overtaken by a dark, calculating horror as every piece of their shared history and business partnership with the Blakes suddenly twists into something sinister.
"A syndicate," Gray repeats, the word tasting alien and monstrous in his mouth. He stares at her, his mind racing through a decade of loyalty, friendship, and shared ventures with Richard and Fernando Blake. "No. That’s... Dad and Richard have been partners for twenty years. If the Blakes are running an underground empire, Dad would—"
"Dad might not know!" Gabriella interrupts, her voice breaking on a sob as she grabs his wrists, gripping him as if he's her only anchor in a storm. "Or worse... what if he does? Gray, Fernando knows I found out. He knows I saw the data. He cornered me in the hallway tonight, and..."
She stops, the memory of Fernando’s velvet voice whispering in the dark—“tomorrow morning, you are going to come to my office at Blake Tower”—sending a fresh wave of ice through her veins.
"And what, Gabby?" Gray demands, his eyes blazing with a protective rage that pushes past his own shock. "What did he do?"
"He told me to go to Blake Tower tomorrow morning," she whispers, her voice trembling uncontrollably. "Alone. Gray, he’s going to dismantle me. If I don't go, or if I step out of line, I won't just ruin the family alliance... I don't think I'm walking out of that tower alive."
.
Gray’s hand is already hovering over his phone, his thumb slamming against the screen to pull up an encrypted comms line to VALCOR’s security detail, when the dark screen of Gabriella’s phone suddenly flashes back to life with a blinding, harsh white glare.
A notification banner drops from the top of the display, vibrating violently against the leather seat.
“GABRIELLA!! I WAS JUST DIGGED INTO THEIR HISTORY OF VICTIMS, the crazy mistaken information is all of BLAKE&CO’s victims are the danger and trapped corporates. Which in short, they are protecting VALCOR from the underworld’s threats!”
The words hang in the dim, moving light of the car cabin, freezing them both mid-breath.
Gray’s fingers halt over his keypad. He stares down at the message, his brow furrowing into a deep, sharp crease as his brain violently stalls out trying to reprocess every assumption he has held for the last twenty minutes.
"Protecting... VALCOR?" Gray breathes out, his voice a bewildered whisper as he looks from the glowing screen up to Gabriella’s pale, tear-streaked face. "What is she talking about? What victims?"
Gabriella’s heart stutters, the heavy, suffocating terror in her chest suddenly fracturing under a wave of absolute, dizzying confusion. She taps the notification, unlocking the full data dump Dalina had sent moments before. More lines of encrypted text and intercepted wire transfers scroll down the screen—not profits from arms trafficking, but complex, invisible financial shields, ghost shell companies, and targeted assassinations of rival syndicate bosses who had spent the last decade putting out silent hits on VALCOR’s key executives and board members.
The ruthless, terrifying empire the Blakes built wasn't just an offensive weapon operating in the shadows. It was a violent, unacknowledged bodyguard standing between the clean, vulnerable corporate world of VALCOR and the absolute predators of the international underworld.
And Fernando—the man she had spent the entire evening viewing as a monster holding a knife to her throat—had known every single secret she was unearthing. He hadn't cornered her in the hallway to silence her. He had cornered her because she had blindly picked up a live grenade, unaware that she was about to blow up the very wall keeping her family safe.
"Gray..." Gabriella whispers, the phone trembling so hard in her hand she can barely read the glowing text anymore, the cold realization washing over her with a force that leaves her entirely breathless. "He didn't threaten me to cover his tracks..."
She looks up at her brother, her eyes wide with a terrifying, disorienting mix of guilt, horror, and a strange, shattering realization.
"He was trying to stop me from destroying the only thing keeping us alive."
