17. Brother

921 Words
“But…about Gray…” The mention of her brother snaps the delicate, suspended spell in the room, dragging her back from the safe, suffocating warmth of his embrace to the harsh reality waiting outside the penthouse doors. Fernando’s thumb pauses against her cheek, the soft, patient warmth in his dark eyes instantly sharpening into a cool, calculating focus. He doesn't pull away, but the shift in his posture is undeniable—the head of the Blake syndicate returning to the board. "Gray," Fernando repeats, the name carrying a heavy, guarded weight. He lets his hand slide down from her face, his fingers resting casually on the edge of the mahogany desk once more as he watches her closely. "What about him, Gabby?" He knows how fiercely protective her brother is. He knows that last night in the restaurant, Gray caught the coded taps, saw the panic, and nearly blew the lid off the entire fragile truce between their families. "He thinks I'm walking into a lion's den," Gabriella whispers, her fingers nervously twisting the fabric of her skirt again as she looks down at the open dossier. "And after last night... after knowing what your family does, what you do... he's terrified. He threatened to cut ties with VALCOR's alliances if he even thinks you're treating me like a threat instead of... whatever we are." A dark, humorless smile touches the corner of Fernando's mouth, though there is no malice in it—only a grim, pragmatic understanding. "Your brother is doing his job. He’s protecting his family, exactly the way I protect mine," Fernando says smoothly, his voice dropping into a low, steady register. "He thinks the choice is simple. He thinks he can draw a line in the sand and keep VALCOR clean while letting the Blakes take the fall in the dark." Fernando leans back slightly, his dark gaze locking onto hers with unyielding intensity. "He can't have it both ways, Gabby. None of you can. But for your sake—because he is your brother, and because you care about him—I let him keep his illusions a little longer. As long as he stays in his lane and doesn't interfere with the architecture keeping your family alive, Gray has nothing to fear from me." He reaches out, his fingers gently covering her trembling hands where they are clenched tightly in her lap, anchoring her against the rising panic. "The real question is... what does Gray need to believe to keep the peace? And more importantly... are you going to help him understand, or are we going to keep playing games behind your brother's back?" The dry, breathless little laugh slips past her lips before she can catch it, cracking the heavy, charged air of the penthouse like a sudden ray of sunlight breaking through storm clouds. The absurdity of it—her fiercely protective, impeccably tailored older brother trying to physically dismantle the head of the city's most feared underground syndicate—is almost too much to process. "Gray's gonna beat the hell out of you, Fern... hahaha," she murmurs, the tension in her shoulders finally dissolving as the ghost of their childhood teases resurfaces, bridging the impossible gap between the dangerous men they’ve become and the kids who used to steal apples from the orchard down the road. For a single heartbeat, Fernando stares at her, completely unaccustomed to the sound of genuine, unguarded laughter in this fortress of steel and shadow. Then, slowly, the hard, impenetrable mask gives way. A low, genuine chuckle rumbles deep in his chest—a sound she hasn't heard in years, warm and entirely stripped of the corporate armor he wears for the rest of the world. "Let him try," Fernando replies, a dark, amused glint dancing in his obsidian eyes as he leans back in his chair, folding his arms across his broad chest with an expression of supreme, unbothered confidence. "I'll let him land three punches before I remind him who used to carry his schoolbag uphill because he was too busy complaining about his loafers." "He hated those loafers," Gabriella whispers, a fond, wistful smile touching the corners of her mouth as the memories flood in, washing away the terror of the past twenty-four hours. "He hated everything that didn't involve looking like a CEO by age twelve," Fernando fires back effortlessly, his gaze softening as he looks at her—really looks at her—without the veil of secrets, threats, or corporate espionage hanging between them. The silence that settles over them now isn't suffocating; it's heavy with a quiet, hard-won peace. The ledger remains open on the desk, its dense, terrifying columns of blood, money, and survival still waiting to be read. The underworld hasn't gone anywhere, and the brutal reality of what keeps VALCOR breathing is still etched into every page. But for the first time since she stepped foot into this tower, the weight of it doesn't feel like a noose. Fernando reaches across the mahogany surface, his warm, calloused fingers lightly brushing against her knuckles, tracing the line of her hand with an easy, proprietary familiarity. "We'll manage your brother," Fernando says quietly, his voice dropping into a low, steady cadence that anchors her completely. "And we'll manage the board, and the syndicates, and whatever else crawls out of the dark. But right now... finish your morning, Gabby. No ledgers, no panic. Just you and me, the way it used to be before the world got so damn complicated."
