CHAPTER 3

Carl's Pov I sat among the wolf pack’s finest and watched as they drank sweet wine and lusted after each other's wives. I wasn't bothered by any of this as I had always known they were idiots. It was a fact that my father had made me aware of from the time I was a little kid. My father had taught me that the rest of the clan who weren't part of our family were nothing compared to us. According to him, they were foolish and were only useful in battle. According to him, if not for the fact that he needed them for battle he would have considered organizing a great feast, poisoning the meal, and wiping them all out. The only problem with this plan was that it was sure to come back to haunt him as he was going to become a target for the other Alphas of different clans and wolf hunters. We were at the camp and celebrating a victory against another clan who dared to challenge us in battle knowing fully week that they had no chance to win. I was seated waiting for him to come so we could both go to consult the new priest in town who came to visit from another town and was said to be the most powerful. I wanted to visit him in hopes that he would be able to find a lasting solution to my problems of finding my mate which was the last thing I needed to awaken what was left in my powers and become the Alpha of the clan. My father was okay with me beginning the alpha as he felt he was getting too old and wanted to use the time he had left to enjoy himself. It was even my father who had invited him over as he was more than happy to leave it in my hands. According to him, his father no had died after fighting a clan by himself and had only done so to end his own life as he was tired of living. My father was not that crazy and he only wanted a smooth retirement and not to go down in the history books as an i***t. After some minutes, my father emerged from inside with his trousers slightly misplaced. My father toasted to our victory and we all cheered for him. I was the happiest of them as I was happy that we were finally going to consult the priest to learn about the problem I was facing and the solution. “Hey Dad, you took too long. Are you sure the priest is still in town?” I asked as I walked by his side. “Nonsense boy, when it comes to these things, there's never enough time. You should be happy your father is still this strong at this age as it means you will also be the same when you get there,” he replied, making me scoff. There was no way in hell I was going to live my life like him. I was different. The city was going to respect me and fear me. When I got my powers, I wasn't going to be like any other alpha as I was a different breed. “So, what if it turned out to be someone you knew?” my father asked. “I doubt that. I don't care who it is. I'm okay with whoever it is as long as I get my powers,” I replied. “Nonsense, you shouldn't test the moon goddess like that. You might get punished for it,” he replied, but I didn't feel threatened by that as I was not bothered by that threat. After we left the camp, we began our journey to know my fate as I was going to make sure we didn't stop till we got what I wanted no matter what. With excitement, I trailed behind my father, the Alpha, as we walked into the thick nature, my heart full of anticipation. There was a wolf priest we were going to, who was said to have great power as well as knowledge. As we got closer to the residence of the priest, I could sense something strange coming from inside the den. “Remember, son, respect and humility,” this time was the repeat of the father’s phrase but with reason but also in a low voice. I did yes, even though my head was spinning with questions. What was the priest expecting me to tell him? What’s more, am I going to learn who my mate is in the end? The priest, an old wolf with deep green shining eyes welcomed us, “Aha, young Carl; I can tell you are not at peace.” I agreed and took my seat on the left side of my father. “I want to know where my mate is. Is she out there? Does she live?” The priest’s mouth lifted and there glimmered something conspiratorial in his eyes. “Ha, the perpetual fight for the mauled love. Yes, it is. Very well, so I have a story for you.” He began by unfolding to us the rich history of several powerful ancient wolves as they searched for their mates. Some never got to be reunited someday with their mate while some were surprised with who walked in. I paid attention; I could feel my heart racing. Is that my destiny? His eyes were fixed on me, almost drilling through me. “And so, young Carl, the time has come for you to learn the truth as you are eager to, I believe.” There was a moment of silence as he looked away for a moment and her eyes burned with rage. “Your soulmate, Carl, is… Bella.” I felt dizzy with disbelief. Bella? My cousin? The one whom I tortured every day? “No!” I shouted, jumping up from my seat. “That cannot be true!” My father looked surprised, his eyes wide open to the revelation. However, the priest appeared unfazed. “Fate is not always favorable young one. But know that you will have to embrace your mate, or else she may be lost to you forever.” I moved out of the den and felt my heart between outrage and total disbelief. Bella? My mate? No way. On the way home, something dark started to grow inside me. Bella was waiting inside, unaware of what was about to happen but I was ready for her.
