Chapter 7
I woke up with a bright light shining into my eyes. I was laying in bed and felt dizzy and cold. My arm was hooked up to an IV that was pumping blood into my veins.
In the room with me was President Laura and an older female nurse who was checking my vital signs. “Do you remember what happened?”asked President Laura. Her mouth was drawn tight and I could tell that she was distressed.
“I remember being at a party, then I left, and Scarlett…”, I paused, not sure that I wanted to share the intimate experience of Scarlett biting me.
“We have witnesses who saw her biting you and draining your blood”, said President Laura in a stern voice.
I nodded my head in agreement.
“I thought you were told to stay away from Blood Vamps” said a familiar voice from the doorway. I turned my head to look at Anthony Jerome who was leaning against the doorway. He looked as serious and miserable as usual.
“There was also a large amount of alcohol in your system”, said the nurse who was refilling one of the bags attached to me.
My face turned red and I looked at President Laura, worried that I was going to be expelled. She looked so disappointed in me and I felt like a scorned child.
“Underage drinking is strictly forbidden here at The Institute. There will be consequences for you and the other party goers. As for Scarlett, given that she provided the alcohol and almost killed you, she has been expelled.”
I felt sick to my stomach, and not just from the night of drinking. I felt so guilty for causing Scarlett to be expelled and getting my new friends in trouble. “Please don’t punish everyone else. We were just having some fun. I don’t think Scarlett meant to bite me either, she just seemed to lose control.”
“That's exactly the problem”, Anthony said angrily. “Blood Vampires struggle the most with self control out of any other Demon species. Having someone here who is half Succubus and half human is much too enticing for them. I suggest she be separated from the rest of the students at once, before she ends up killed.”
I felt my heartbeat pound in my chest. “Please don’t expel me. I can’t go back to my parents. They think I'm a drug addict and I won't survive in another rehab. I know I’m 18 but I don’t know what I would do out in the real world. I’m afraid I might hurt someone in an accident.”
President Laura was nodding her head thoughtfully. “I definitely don’t think that you can go back to your parents. The Institute also can’t have a newly awakened Demon running around with humans. We will just have to find a way to isolate you from the Blood Vampires.”
“I can tutor her”, said Anthony to my surprise.
“That should work. Since you seem to be able to control yourself around Cynthia it should be safe enough. Plus this could give you that extra credit you need to graduate early. We will just have to make sure that Cynthia has a different schedule from the Blood Vampires. That shouldn’t be too difficult since we prefer to be nocturnal.
I felt relieved that I wouldn't be expelled but nervous about Anthony being my tutor. I was left alone with the nurse whose name was Beth.
"I've never treated a half breed before", she said as she checked my blood pressure. "I wasn't sure whether to give you human or Demon blood so I gave you both. It seemed to do the trick."
"There have to be others like me
I can't be the only one."
Beth was an interesting lady with bright pink hair that clashed with her yellow glasses. She took off her glasses and gave me a pointed look. "Darling I'm an energy vampire and I've lived 200 years. I have never heard of a half breed living past childhood. The Demon side consumed the human side until there was nothing left. You are an anomaly and I'm sure there are plenty of scientists who would want to study you."
I didn't like the idea of being studied, but I wondered, what was different about me?
