Chapter 10: Smoke and Ashes

The world didn’t end with Seraphine’s arrest. It merely cracked open. Lexi had expected the silence to feel triumphant. She’d imagined waking up to a city that pulsed with justice, to crowds chanting her name, to a life finally hers. But when the noise stopped, what remained was a strange stillness. Like the world had inhaled—and never exhaled. The media frenzy had lasted for days. Every network screamed her story. “Heir of Lies,” one headline read. “Daughter of the Covenant: From Captive to Crusader,” said another. Photos of Lexi stepping through the flames had become symbols of rebellion, freedom, revolution. And still, none of it felt real. Damien stood behind her on the rooftop of the old hotel they now called home. The night sky stretched above them, cracked with starlight. Far below, the city buzzed and breathed. “You haven’t said much,” he said. Lexi gripped the edge of the stone railing. “There’s too much to say.” Damien came closer, his shadow brushing hers. “So say what matters.” She turned to face him, her eyes colder than winter. “She stole everything from me,” Lexi whispered. “My name. My parents. My future. And I spent years being angry. But now that she’s gone, I don’t know who I am without that fire.” Damien studied her. “You’re not done yet,” he said. “Seraphine was a symptom. The Covenant is the disease.” Lexi looked away. “We exposed them.” “We exposed one chapter. You think this ends because a monster fell?” Silence. Then Lexi nodded slowly. The real war had only just begun. --- Three days later, Ezra walked into the hotel room with a brown envelope and a face tight with fear. “They found her.” Lexi looked up. “Who?” He tossed the envelope onto the table. Photos spilled out. A girl—no older than fifteen. Dark curls. Bright eyes. Bruised. “Her name is Mina. She escaped a Covenant facility in Berlin.” Lexi picked up a photo with trembling fingers. The girl’s wrists were raw, her gaze hollow. Ezra continued, “There are more of them. Not just orphans. Recruits. Genetic trials. They were experimenting, Lex.” Lexi's stomach turned. She had seen horrors in Seraphine’s files. But this? This was something darker. “Where is Mina now?” “Safe house in Prague. But Covenant eyes are everywhere. She’s not safe.” Lexi didn’t hesitate. “Then we go to her.” Damien stepped into the room. “We’ll need IDs, weapons, extraction routes.” “I’ll handle it,” Ezra said. Lexi stared at the photo in her hand. She saw herself in Mina’s broken expression. She would not let another girl grow up in a cage. --- The flight to Prague was silent. Lexi watched the clouds roll past the window, her mind a storm of resolve. Damien sat beside her, eyes closed, fingers drumming rhythmically on his knee. When they landed, a storm brewed over the city. Prague was beautiful—old and aching with history. Cobblestones glistened under the rain, and churches loomed like sentinels. But Lexi had no time for beauty. Not when a child’s life hung in the balance. They reached the safe house after nightfall. Mina sat huddled in a corner, wrapped in a blanket, flinching at every sound. Lexi knelt before her. “Hi, Mina. I’m Lexi.” The girl didn’t speak. Lexi tried again. “You’re safe now. I promise.” Mina looked up, eyes wide and red-rimmed. “They said I was special. That I could make the world better.” Lexi felt her heart shatter. She reached out slowly, giving Mina time. When the girl finally took her hand, something unspoken passed between them. And Lexi knew: this was her purpose. Not revenge. Redemption. --- They stayed in Prague for three days, hiding, healing, planning. Ezra intercepted encrypted Covenant messages. There was talk of retaliation. Talk of Lexi. “They’re calling you the Red Ghost,” he told her with a smirk. Lexi raised an eyebrow. “Sounds dramatic.” Damien chuckled. “You did walk out of fire.” Lexi didn’t laugh. Instead, she stared out the window, thinking of every child the Covenant had stolen, every life they had broken, every lie they had told. This was bigger than one woman. This was a war. And Lexi Moore was done hiding. --- On the flight home, Mina curled up in Lexi’s lap. “Can I stay with you?” she whispered. Lexi stroked her hair. “As long as you want.” The girl clung tighter. And in that moment, Lexi felt something she hadn’t felt in years. Hope. --- When they returned, Lexi walked to the rooftop alone. The stars blinked above her. The city breathed below. She closed her eyes. She was no longer a ghost. She was a reckoning. And she was just getting started.
