Valentina De Luca
Valentina did not sleep.
She sat in Luca's office until morning, staring at the phone resting on the desk.
The unknown number had been disconnected.
No trace.
No way to find out who had called.
But the question remained.
Why were you the only one left alive?
She hated that question.
Because she had asked herself the same thing all night.
Why her?
Why did she wake up when Luca and Matteo didn't?
Why did someone take the two people she loved most and leave her behind?
A knock sounded at the door.
Valentina didn't answer.
The door opened anyway.
Marco stepped inside.
He stopped when he saw her.
Not because she looked broken.
Because she didn't.
The woman sitting behind Luca's desk looked nothing like the one he had seen crying in the hospital.
The grief was still there.
But something had covered it.
Something harder.
"Mrs. De Luca."
Valentina looked up.
"What happened?"
Marco hesitated.
"There was a problem at the east warehouse."
"What kind of problem?"
"The men there refused to follow your orders."
Her expression didn't change.
"They refused?"
"They believe things have changed."
A quiet laugh escaped her.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was expected.
Luca's enemies had always been waiting.
They just needed him gone.
"How many?"
"Seven."
"Names?"
Marco placed a folder on the desk.
She opened it.
Seven names.
Seven men who had worked under her husband.
Seven men who believed they could take advantage of her pain.
Valentina closed the folder.
"Bring them here."
Marco looked surprised.
"All of them?"
"Did I say something unclear?"
"No."
He nodded and turned to leave.
"Marco."
He stopped.
For the first time, she looked directly at him.
"Do not tell anyone what I am planning."
His brows furrowed.
"Mrs. De Luca—"
"Especially not them."
The warning in her voice made him pause.
Then he nodded.
"Understood."
The meeting room had always belonged to Luca.
Men had sat around that table for years, discussing deals, territory, and enemies.
They had respected him.
They had feared him.
But when Valentina walked in alone, the room changed.
Seven men sat waiting.
Some looked uncomfortable.
Some looked amused.
The man sitting at the center, Vincent Moretti, leaned back.
"Valentina."
She hated the way he said her name.
Not with respect.
With pity.
"I heard you wanted to speak with us."
Valentina took the chair at the head of the table.
The same chair Luca used.
"Yes."
Vincent exchanged a glance with the others.
"About what?"
"About loyalty."
A few men smiled.
Vincent leaned forward.
"Loyalty is earned."
Valentina looked at him.
"My husband earned yours."
"Your husband is dead."
The room went silent.
Marco, standing near the door, watched carefully.
Valentina remained still.
Vincent continued.
"The world has changed. You need to accept that."
"Have you finished?"
He frowned.
"I am trying to help you understand reality."
"No."
She looked around the table.
"You are trying to convince yourself that I am weak."
The smiles disappeared.
Valentina placed Luca's ring on the table.
A small object.
But every man in that room knew what it represented.
"Did my husband ever remove this ring?"
Nobody answered.
"Did he ever stop being the head of this family because people wanted him gone?"
Silence.
"Then why do you think his death changed who I am?"
Vincent laughed.
"You?"
He shook his head.
"With all due respect, Valentina, this isn't a game."
She looked at him calmly.
"No."
Her voice lowered.
"It's not."
Ten minutes later, nobody was laughing.
The meeting ended differently than anyone expected.
Valentina didn't scream.
She didn't beg.
She didn't ask for loyalty.
She simply reminded them of something important.
The De Luca family had never survived because people loved them.
They survived because people feared crossing them.
When the men finally left, Marco remained.
He looked at her differently now.
Not like a grieving wife.
Like someone trying to understand who she was becoming.
"You handled that well."
Valentina looked toward the window.
"I didn't handle anything."
Marco frowned.
"What do you mean?"
She touched the glass.
"I let them believe they were right."
That evening, Valentina returned to Luca's office.
She opened the folder Marco had given her.
The names.
The rumors.
The information collected after the attack.
Most of it was useless.
Until she found one detail.
A security report.
A strange message received hours before the attack.
Her eyes narrowed.
Someone had known their route.
Someone had known the exact time.
Someone close enough to have access.
Her phone rang.
She answered immediately.
"Yes?"
A man's voice came through.
"Mrs. De Luca."
She recognized it.
The same voice from last night.
Her grip tightened.
"You."
"I see you've started looking."
"Who are you?"
A pause.
Then:
"Someone who knows the truth about that night."
Valentina stood.
"What truth?"
The person laughed softly.
"You really don't remember everything, do you?"
Her heartbeat changed.
"What are you talking about?"
"The night your husband died..."
Silence.
"Wasn't the first time someone tried to destroy your family."
Valentina's eyes narrowed.
"Explain."
But the line went dead.
Again.
She stared at the phone.
Her mind raced.
Because she knew one thing.
Whoever this person was...
They weren't calling to scare her.
They wanted her to search.
And that meant one thing.
There was something she had missed.
Something hidden.
Something someone didn't want her to find.
Valentina looked at the photograph on Luca's desk.
The three of them smiling.
Before everything changed.
Her fingers closed around the frame.
"Who did this to us?"
For the first time since the attack, she allowed herself to ask the question out loud.
And somewhere in the city...
Someone already knew the answer.
