Chapter 8: Cracks

Maya sat at the kitchen counter, nursing a cup of tea while Liam paced the apartment. “I told them I didn’t do anything wrong,” Liam said, his voice sharp. “But they’re acting like I’m guilty until proven innocent.” “Maybe they just have to follow procedure,” Maya said gently. “It’s humiliating, Maya. Do you know what this does to my reputation?” She flinched at the edge in his tone. “I’m just trying to help.” Liam dragged a hand through his hair, exhaling sharply. “I know. I just… I can’t deal with this right now.” He grabbed his jacket and left, the door slamming behind him. Before she could respond, someone approached to pull Ethan into another conversation. He gave her a small, knowing smile before stepping away. ⸻ That night, Maya couldn’t stop thinking about him. Not just his words but the way he made her feel seen. Meanwhile, Liam didn’t come home until midnight. He reeked of alcohol, his tie loosened, his mood sour. “Everything okay?” Maya asked carefully. He just grunted, collapsing onto the couch. As she stood there, watching him, Maya couldn’t shake the memory of Ethan’s steady, reassuring gaze. ⸻ Across the city, Ethan sat in his study, watching the surveillance footage from earlier that night. She was starting to open up to him. He smiled faintly, swirling the dark amber liquid in his glass. Liam was breaking. And Maya was already beginning to lean. ⸻
