"Have you lost your mind?" Veronica said. "For a human? She cheated on you!"
"Elara didn't cheat," Orion said flatly. "I asked Samuel to bring her tonight. She's studying biogenetics. I wanted her to see what the field looks like at the top."
I hadn't expected him to defend me in a room like this.
But it didn't take me long to figure out why. Half his business partners were standing within earshot. If a man just stood there while his own wife got called a cheater, and didn't say a word? He'd never live it down.
He wasn't protecting me. He was protecting himself.
Fine. I'd let him have his moment. It cost me nothing.
Soon enough, everyone in this room would know I wasn't here as anyone's guest. I was one of the people behind it.
