It’s hard to shake a belief that gets imbedded in your skull when you’re a little kid. If you get told often enough that you’re worthless or that you’ll never amount to anything, it doesn’t matter what you do in life—business, art, love—there’s always going to be a voice nagging in the back of your consciousness that says you haven’t done enough. That you haven’t done it right. You never will. Sometimes, though, if we’re really lucky, someone comes along and they tell you something different. They whisper in your ear that you’re perfect the way you are. They make you say it along with them until you believe it, too. It doesn’t make the voice go away, but it does help to drown it out. Faith, love, honesty, and hope: These things don’t belong solely to organized religion. God, Christ, Allah
