“Karen!” I called, urgency sharpening my voice. She turned, glare flashing as I caught her hand. She pulled away instantly, her eyes hardening when she noticed the other women watching us. “I owe you nothing!” The words hit harder than I expected, but I forced myself to stay steady. “Please, just listen. Your daughter called because she approached her sire on her own. She needs us united, not divided.” Karen froze, disbelief flickering across her face. “She did what? Why? And why would she call you?” Her voice cracked, anxious and afraid, betraying the ferocity beneath. Her body slackened, mouth opening and closing like a fish gasping for air as she scrambled for something to throw back at me. I saw the calculation in her eyes, the desperate search for leverage, but I didn’t care.
