CHAPTER 3 — The Alpha’s Challenge

1164 Words
POV: Aurora The moment I walked into the training arena, I could feel every pair of eyes slicing through me like daggers. The scent of earth, sweat, and dominance filled the air. The future warriors of Crescent High were already lined up, all strong, confident, and annoyingly proud. I didn’t belong here. Not anymore. “Rogue,” someone muttered under their breath. I ignored it. Barely. The whispers followed me like shadows. They didn’t see the girl I used to be the Beta’s daughter, once destined to stand beside an Alpha. Now, all they saw was the she-wolf who had been rejected. I clenched my fists as I stepped into the center of the field. I was here for one reason only: to survive. To prove that rejection didn’t mean I was weak. “Training starts with sparring,” Beta Roland’s voice boomed. “You’ll all be paired off. Remember, this is about control, not destruction.” I almost relaxed… until he smirked. “Aurora, you’ll go first.” Of course. The crowd stirred, eager for a show. Roland’s eyes flicked toward the tall figure emerging from the opposite side of the arena, broad shoulders, sharp jaw, a smirk that screamed danger. Damien Nightbourne. The future Alpha King. My heart stuttered. The bond between us fainted, barely there pulsed once like a cruel reminder. The Moon Goddess must have a twisted sense of humor. The same wolf who once looked at me like I was dirt now carried my second-chance bond. “Scared, little wolf?” Damien’s voice was deep, calm, laced with amusement. “Only boring opponents,” I shot back, keeping my tone cold. The crowd “oohed.” His smirk widened. Beta Roland raised his hand. “Begin!” Before I could even blink, Damien lunged fast, precise, ruthless. I dodged his first strike, barely avoiding his arm as it swung past me. The force of it whooshed through the air beside my ear. He wasn’t holding back. Good. Neither was I. I spun low, sweeping my leg toward his ankle. He jumped back, but I caught his wrist, twisted, and shoved my knee into his side. A gasp rippled through the crowd. For a second, his golden eyes met mine, sharp, unreadable. And then he smiled. “You’ve improved.” “Maybe you were just blind before,” I snapped, breathing hard. He moved again, faster this time, his hand gripping my shoulder and flipping me backward in one swift motion. I landed on the ground with a thud, dust rising around me. “Still predictable,” he murmured. I glared up at him. “You still underestimate me.” The bond flickered heat shooting through my chest. For a terrifying second, his expression softened, confusion flashing in his eyes. Then it was gone. He released me and stepped back. “Enough,” Beta Roland called. “That’s enough.” The murmurs started immediately. “She’s strong…” “But she’s rogue…” “She shouldn’t even be here.” I stood, brushing dirt from my clothes, my pulse thundering in my ears. I didn’t need their approval. I needed to stay alive long enough to find out why the Moon Goddess had done this to me. As I turned to leave the arena, Damien’s voice stopped me. “You fight like someone who has something to prove,” he said quietly, so only I could hear. “Maybe I do,” I replied. “Or maybe I fight like someone who’s tired of being broken.” Our gazes locked for one long, dangerous second. The bond flared that strange, magnetic pull between us, tightening until I could hardly breathe. He took a small step closer. “Stay out of my way, Aurora. The next time we meet, I might not be able to hold back.” “Then don’t,” I whispered. “Let’s see who survives.” Later that night… The moon hung high silver and full when the whispers came again. It started as a faint hum inside my head, like distant music only I could hear. Then words. Aurora… I froze. That voice, soft, ancient, powerful, wrapped around my thoughts like silk. Who’s there? I whispered silently. You are bound by more than rejection. You are chosen. My protector. My voice. My breath hitched. “Moon Goddess?” The air shimmered, and suddenly I wasn’t in my dorm room anymore. I stood in a vast field bathed in silver light. A woman cloaked in moonlight stood before me, eyes glowing like galaxies. “Yes, child,” she said. “You are my vessel. My guardian. But darkness rises within the Nightbourne line. When the Alpha King ascends, blood will fall… unless you stop him.” “Stop him?” I repeated, heart pounding. “Damien?” She smiled sadly. “Or save him. The bond will test you both.” Before I could speak again, the vision shattered, and I was back in my room, trembling, drenched in cold sweat. What did she mean, save him? The next day… The Academy buzzed with rumors. Some said I’d cheated during the spar. Others said Damien had gone easy on me. None of it mattered until I saw him again. He stood near the courtyard fountain, surrounded by his inner circle. His presence commanded the space power radiating off him in waves. But when his eyes met mine across the crowd, everything else disappeared. He dismissed his friends and walked toward me. “You look like you didn’t sleep.” I crossed my arms. “Maybe because a certain Alpha threw me on the ground yesterday.” He smirked. “You asked for it.” The air between us grew tense again that familiar pull, like gravity itself, wanted us closer. “Why did you come here?” he asked suddenly. “You could’ve left the packlands. Started over somewhere else.” “Because I’m not running anymore,” I said. “And because there’s something I need to figure out.” He tilted his head. “What’s that?” “How to survive you.” His expression shifted to something darker, flickering behind his golden eyes. “Then you should know,” he said softly, stepping closer, “I’m not your enemy… not yet.” “Funny,” I whispered. “You sound like someone who wants to be.” He smiled slowly and dangerously. “Maybe I do.” That night, as the wind howled through the forest, I stood beneath the moon again, her voice echoing faintly in my mind. The bond between you and the Alpha King will decide the fate of the realms. Protect him… or destroy him. I stared into the shadows beyond the trees, my heartbeat thundering. For the first time, I realized something terrifying. . The Moon Goddess hadn’t chosen me to save the world. She’d chosen me to choose between love and war. And either choice could end everything.
