A Chinese-American community began in the Mississippi Delta, home of the blues, back in the 1870s. It started when a Chinese work agent arranged jobs for some Chinese immigrants who were hired to do the labor once done by slaves. When this agent visited his clients a year later to find out how they liked the work, they expressed their opinion by trying to lynch him. In one capacity or another, however, a number of them settled in the area permanently.
