Afterword: A Chinese-American community began in the Mississippi Delta, home of the blues, back in the 1870s. It started when a Chinese work agent arranged jobs for some Chinese immigrants who were hired to do the labor once done by slaves. When this agent visited his clients a year later to find out how they liked the work, they expressed their opinion by trying to lynch him. In one capacity or another, however, a number of them settled in the area permanently. As a Chinese American born in Missouri, raised in Kansas, and educated in Michigan, I’ve always been especially interested in Asian Americans who don’t live in the more familiar geographical locations of the Northeast and West Coast.
