CAEL'S POV
Her words dug into my heart like a sharp dagger. I felt the air in my lungs go sour as I reached for the paper. She passed it to me. I scanned my eyes hastily over it down to the bottom and as I read the last test, I felt all the air in my lungs fade away.
REJECTED.
My chest heaved heavily as my fingers trembled. “No.. No. This can't be.”
Tears stung my already sore eyes and I sniffled. The loan was the only way I could go to college. The fees here were ridiculously high, even if I worked ten jobs at the club, I still wouldn't be able to pay half.
Nina tried to motivate me but her words fell on deaf ears. “You can still attend—”
I cut her off. “I can't. The student loan is my last and only choice without it, I guess I have to forfeit it.”
The tear in my eye dripped down as Nina gripped my shoulders with the paper slip still in her hands. “I can get my dad to get the board to give your application a revisit. Oh look, they added the reasons for rejection.”
My eyes lit up. “And what is that? If it's something I can change, I'll do it immediately and reapply.”
The rising gleam of hope in my eyes died down when I heard her voice. “Unrecognized bloodline.”
The reason for the rejection stung even more than the rejection itself. I couldn't believe that my father's heritage had been pulled under the rug. My father was close to the ministers in the pack. He was good to them. Each and every single one of them.
I clenched my fists and stepped forward. “How could they reject my application after everything my father had—”
My voice came out as a growl. My wolf was enraged by it. Just like me, he was also angered by the fact that I didn't get in after all I'd done. Nina stepped close and muttered under his breath, “Relax Cael. I'll get my dad to make them revisit it. In fact, go dress up, I'll drive you to his office on campus.”
A shaky smile spread on my cheeks. “W-would you?”
My breath was shaky. He nodded his head sealing all my doubts as I raced towards the bathroom. I hurriedly took my mate out on a fresh pair of clothes and followed him. He drove us to the office of the minister in charge of the reviews.
As I got out of the car, I received a text from my boss.
MR. BUCKER: I see you’ve run off. Good for you, lad. The rumors about that man seem to be true. Cecilia vanished—like the others. He’s probably eaten her insides by now.
My heartbeat quickened as Nina's voice sliced through the air. “Let's go in, Cael. You look like you've seen a ghost.”
I pushed forward on drained legs and made my way to the man's office. When we got in there, he shot me a disgusted glance. We settled into our respective seats and as Nina tried to convince the man, he offered us a hard NO.
“Please sir..” I tried to speak but the look on the man's face spared no sympathy whatsoever. Nina wanted to stick behind but I tapped his shoulder and whispered.
“Let's go, Nina.”
I got up from the chair and strolled out of the room subconsciously. I tried my best to channel my anger towards the ministers of the pack but I couldn't. Instead, it went to one man. Alpha Alejandro. The man from last night. He was the one who killed my parents, ruined my life and made it a living hell. If he were close to me right now, I would've stabbed him in the heart the way he killed my family.
Thoughts were still circling in my mind when I caught a glimpse of a man that looked exactly like him. Dark blue eyes. Broad shoulders. Diamond shaped face. All black apparel.
I knew this man.
It was him.
Before I could digest the weight of his presence, his eyes met mine. “Why are you here?” I asked, my voice trembling.
“Tell me, little wolf. Do you think this is some Cinderella story? You dropped your shoe.”
I turned around, hoping no one was around to see him passing me a pair of pink stripper heels. “Ugh? Scared if someone's going to see us?”
I shook my head. “That is the least of my worries. I actually have a—”
He pressed his index finger against my lips for a second as he pulled close to me and sniffed my scent. I tried to mask it so he wouldn't find out we're mates but before I could connect with my wolf, his eyes darkened.
“The moon goddess got to be kidding me… She gave me you?” His fingers grazed my cheek. “Oh, I’m keeping you.”
I brushed them off. “I’d rather burn than belong to you.”
“Then burn, little flame. I’ll be the only one watching.”
Fear carved a hole in my heart as I held my breath waiting patiently for his next words. “I don’t think you understand how much I want you. You're the last piece of my f****d up puzzle."
"Be mine. In exchange, I’ll settle every bill, pull you out of that goddamn club, and—”
He stepped closer, his voice dropping,
“—you’ll belong to me. No turning back.”
His scent jagged into my nostrils as I tried to pull out of his hold but somehow I couldn't. It felt like my legs had been rigged to the spot, making it hard for me to move. My wolf howled as I received a short message from him.
“Should we accept?”
I shook my head. “No. He's dangerous. I don't even know if the rumours circulating about him are real. And the thing with Cecilia?—”
I was just about to finish my sentence when all of a sudden, I heard a voice in my head. It was his. “Dare to find out?”
I froze. The question wasn’t if I waned to, but if I dared. Because once I said yes—there was no turning back.
"Yes.”
