CHAPTER 12
Mark tried desperately not to shed tears as he flew down the interstate. He glanced at the speedometer, doing his best to keep his velocity reasonable. “Why, Mark? Why did you leave her?” he repeatedly asked himself. He pounded the palm of his hand on the steering wheel. Mile marker after mile marker passed by until at last he reached the bridge and crossed into Indiana.
At the hospital, Nicole was in recovery. The doctors had finished operating on her extensive injuries, but she remained unconscious. Ashley was sitting nervously in the waiting room, hoping for any kind of update. One of the physicians walked out, looking for Nicole’s family.
“I’m not family, I’m a friend. I don’t think she has any family nearby,” Ashley told him.
“I understand. Well, overall, it looks good.
