Hudson led us down to the lower levels of the castles, through a hidden hallway inside the walls, and I hated it. I hated enclosed spaces, and so did Emmet, who was gripping my hand tightly.
I noticed Daisey looking at us from time to time, and then down at our hands, and when I read her mind, I realized she was jealous because she had a crush on Emmet. Poor girl was going to get her heart broken if she continued down this road.
When we finally reached the lower level, Hudson pushed against a wall, and it opened out into a basement, and my hand tightened around Emmet's so hard, my knuckles turned white.
''Easy. Don't panic. It's not like with Emory. It's for our protection'' Emmet whispered, but I could tell he was just as afraid.
My whole body was trembling, and I was covered in a thin layer of sweat.
''Are you alright?'' Harper asked as she looked over me.
''I'm fine'' I lied, and continued to follow Hudson.
Other pack members were walking down the pathway now, and most were children. They must have keep the children here during a fight.
''I'll never understand why you people always put a bunker under the castle or pack house'' Emmet said to others ''If someone's attacking, those are the main targets I'd go for. Hell, I have gon''
I nudged him and he shut up looking worried. The fool was going to admit that he'd helped Emory attack other packs.
As we reached the entrance of the bunker where guards were letting pack members inside, and writing their names down in a tablet, I froze. I couldn't do this. I couldn't willingly go inside and be locked in.
''Zan, you're holding everyone up'' Emmet tried to push me forward, but I growled at him, and he quickly stepped back, knowing not to push me when I was upset.
I could feel my head getting dizzy and my heart was racing in fear, as my powers started bubbling to the surface, but then something happened that shocked me and all the fear died down.
Mae reached out and grabbed my hand. ''Big sister, you have to move'' She said in her sweet voice and I looked down at her in shock, how had she calmed me? Was it because she was related to my mates? ''Everyone's waiting''
I looked behind me and saw a few pack members waiting, so I quickly started walking again, and Emmet reached out to grab my other hand again.
''Princess, Harper,'' The guards greeted them, before turning to me ''Name?''
''This is your future Queen,'' Daisey told him ''Luna Zaniah.''
I groaned internally, I hated having a fake name.
''Then tell our mates who you are!'' Zora snapped angrily, but I didn't respond.
The guards by the door looked at me with renewed interest, while the pack members behind me started talking quietly and checking me out.
''Forgive me, Luna'' The guards said quickly ''Please go ahead. Name?'' He turned to Emmet.
''Emmet,'' He said, and walked inside with me.
The royal bunker I found myself in was unlike any other I had ever entered; it was enormous, reminiscent of a stadium. In the central lobby, long tables were set up where volunteers handed out blankets and bags likely containing clothing and toiletries. The room featured a white stone floor, and the walls were adorned with a stunning seascape that stirred a deep longing for my quaint beach hut.
''Luna,'' Hudson spoke to me, he was holding three bags, and blankets ''Here you are.''
I took one of the bags and a blanket before Hudson passed one to Emmet, giving him a small smile, and I rolled my eyes as Emmet smiled back.
''Thanks,'' Emmet said in his kindest tone.
''Excuce me, are you Luna Zaniah?''
I turned to see a man in his late 40tys standing close to us. He was wearing a suit and smelt like sandlewood, which I didn't really like.
''I'm Zan,'' I corrected.
''Hello, Luna,'' He smiled and reached out his hand but I stepped back, and he lowered it, looking confused ''I'm Gamma Tristan, I take care of the pack while the others are away fighting. We have a private area for the royal family, if you'll please come with me.''
I nodded and Mae started skipping ahead of us as if we were having a vacation. I missed the days when I was so carefree. The days before I'd seen so much death, so much pain.
We were led through the second area, that was split into sections. A large cafeteria area where I could smell coffee and various dishes cooking away. A middle section where sofa and tv's had been set up, along with some toys for the children, who were already running around playing. The section at the back was filled it bunk beds and other cots. A few more doors were leading to another area, and the emblems on each door indicated a shower or toilet.
''Great'' I complained as we stopped at a guarded door ''An even smaller room.''
Emmet put his arm over my shoulders and shook me a little ''Come on, I'm here. And it'll only be a little while.''
I took a deep breath and walked inside. This smaller bunker was more like an apartment, three rooms, two bathrooms, a kitchenette, living room, and dining room.
''Would you like anything to drink Princess. Luna?'' Daisey asked.
''No, thank you'' I answered. ''If I want something, I will get it myself.''
''No thank you Daisey'' Mae said sweetly, still completely unfazed. This kid was either in denial of the fight at the border or she was just a super bubbly kid.
''So what?'' Emmet complained ''Are we supposed to just hang out in here. This is so boring?''
I smiled at him ''You could always go and stand guard with Hudson'' I said innocently, but Emmet just glared at me.
''We can play a game'' Daisey told him.
''YAY!'' Mae clapped and ran over to the tv cabinet and pulled out some cards ''Can we play fish?''
''What's fish?'' Emmet asked as we all sat down at the coffee table.
I quickly explained, and we started playing, but I couldn't concentrate. I hated being trapped in here, it was bringing up memories I was trying hard to forget. Even Zora was restless, though part of her concern was directed at our mates.
''Ask someone to link them and see if they're okay'' She demanded.
''No, just stop nagging.'' I told her and exhaled.
''Is something wrong Luna?'' Daisey asked as she picked up a card.
"No," I lied.
"Are you worried about the Princes?" She asked me. "Don’t worry, they’re checking in on you. So they’re safe."
"I don’t care either way," I told her, and I could see the confusion and sadness on her face due to my response.
"I wish I was with Mommy and Daddy and my brothers," Mae whined, dramatically flopping onto her back on the floor.
"Your family is fighting," Harper reminded her softly. "You will see them again soon."
"My family are heroes," Mae said proudly as she sat up again. "They keep everyone safe. I can’t wait to grow up and fight with them."
"You’ll be a great warrior," Harper replied with a wide grin.
''Don't be in too big of a hurry to grow up Mae," I warned, shooting a glare at Harper. ''And don't romanticize fighting or war, it's not a game.''
Mae looked downcast, but Harper comforted her by rubbing her back. ''Don't be like that Luna,'' She argued ''Fighting for ones family is a noble pursuit, the Prince's know this. They train hard and are very capable.''
''Noble?'' I scoffed, feeling incredulous. ''Don't make me laugh. It's all pointless. Blood and death. And it all happens due to the ego of the Alpha's. You haven't got a clue what you're talking about. Have you ever even been in a fight?''
''No'' She admitted, looking annoyed.
''Of course not,'' I stood up ''Why don't you go fight and then we'll see how noble you think it is when you're picking up your dead friends from the dirt, or having to watch someone die before your eyes because it was your life or theirs, and you chose yours.''
I crossed my arms and walked randomly around the bunker, looking at items placed there.
"Have you?" Harper called after me. I turned back to her. "Have you ever been in a fight? I thought you were locked up all these years?"
"I’ve been fighting every single day since I was 10 years old," I replied, my voice flat. "I know more about it than you ever will. Don’t encourage Mae."
"You don’t even know Mae. I’m her nanny. I know her best and will decide what to encourage," Harper retorted cautiously.
I glared at her. "You’re a fool," I shot back.
"How about we go for a walk?" Emmet suggested quickly, rising from his seat. "You’re the Luna, aren’t you? You should check on the pack."
"Fine," I said with a shrug, eager for an escape from Harper before I lost my temper and punched her in her foolish face.
