Sweet Deception

CHAPTER 1

ANGEL's POV

We're in the cafeteria today because it's our lunch break. I'm with my friends, and the silence is deafening.

"Hmm...Angel! Hindi ba't matagal mo nang gusto si Zack, what if one day he likes you back?" Lexa's question broke the silence, and everyone looked at me.

"Lexa, stop it. It's unlikely to happen. Sa lagay niyang 'yon? He won't like me the way I like him," I replied.

"Well, what if one day he suddenly changes how he treats you and realizes he likes you too? Malay natin 'di ba?" Joza interjected as we talked.

"Precisely! You're not ugly, so it's not impossible for him to like you. You're not stupid either, right?" Aira agreed with the two.

"Why are you asking that? Napakarandom niyo naman sa tanong niyong 'yan. You're being so mischievous. It's unlikely because there's a rumor on campus that he's with Jenny, the new student," I said, trying to stop them.

"What! Is Jenny back? It's impossible for them to get back together because Zack hates her now," Lexa said.

Hmm! What? Sinong Jenny? Impossible for them to be together again? I don't understand.

"What do you mean it's impossible for them to be together again, and sino si Jenny?" I asked, and they suddenly became serious. They're acting weird.

"Because my cousin, Zack, is her ex," Lexa started, so I waited for her to finish what she was going to say. Tahimik lang ako nakikinig sa kaniya.

"Zack loved her so much, but they didn't last because Jenny had to leave the country to study in London at her parents' insistence. Zack agreed because he loved Jenny and didn't want to ruin her future. Two months ago, Zack decided to follow Jenny to London because they'd lost communication; she stopped answering his calls and didn't reply to his texts. But my cousin came home from London disappointed. He told us everything: he had witnessed Jenny with another guy, kissing him. After that, Zack's behavior changed. He became a bad boy, always at the bar. The Zack we knew, with his heavenly smile, was gone, replaced by someone rude and a playboy," Lexa explained softly.

"That's the reason why na kapag nakikita niya ako, just like he wants to eat me whole," I said. It's true, that guy is very naughty. But I don't know why I like him.

"But maybe kapag dumating na 'yong tamang babae para sa kaniya, he will return to the former Zack Ervin Vellasor who is kind." Joza said.

"Maybe that girl is named Angel, Yieh!" They said with a crazy smile, poking me in the side.

"Yieh, she's blushing!"

"Stop it! Let's go na at baka malate pa tayo sa next class natin," I changed the topic, and they agreed.

So we put away our things and hurried to our room.

I woke up because of the loud knocking on my door.

"Angel, wake up! You're going to be late if you aren't in a hurry," my older brother shouted.

"I'm awake! Give me a sec to get dressed, and I'll be right down," I answered. He's angry again, hahaha.

Another day, another academic stress.

I was up and moving fast, doing my morning routine, grabbing my things, and going straight to the dining room. My brother was glaring at me, and I sneezed.

"Why are you so sleepy, you fat kid?" he teased.

"I'm not fat, kuya. I'm sexy!"

"Just eat," he said, disgusted.

"Where's Mom and Dad nga pala?"

"They're out of town on business, baby, but they'll be back this evening. So, drive your car and come home straight after class because I have something important to tell you and show you," he answered.

"I'm not a kid anymore, so don't call me baby."

"Hurry up, lil one. I'm going to work," my brother said.

"Okay brother," I answered. He's sweet, isn't he?

After we ate, I took my bag and car key so I could leave. I'm too lazy to drive, but because of my older brother, I just do it. I know I can't argue when he decides.

Panibagong araw na nakakapagod na naman ito.

I'm here in the parking lot when I see a car next to mine. I was about to leave, but then I heard a familiar voice calling my name.

"I've been trying to get your attention, but you're acting like you don't even hear me. You think you're famous now, girl?" Lexa said. Natatawa na lang ako sa naging asal niya ngayon.

I was about to speak when the person behind us spoke first, so I stopped, and Lexa and I looked at him at the same time.

"Come with us this lunch break," Zack said, turning and walking away. Omg! Zack's words sent a shiver down my spine, and I felt my cheeks flush. I'm going to be with him later.

Omg! Totoo? Si Zack ba 'yon?

Parang kanina lang pagod na pagod na ako kahit hindi pa nagsisimula ang klase, pero ngayon nawala lahat ang pagod na nararamdaman ko kanina! Buo na ang araw ko, girl!

"Someone's cheeks are going to be burning all day," she teased, laughing.

"Hmm, you're delusional." I quickly walked away from her.

Habang papalayo ako sa kaibigan ko ay hindi matanggal tanggal ang ngiti sa aking mga labi, kilig na kilig ate ko.

"Wait up!" She shouted, but I walked even faster until I got to our room. I knew Lexa was right behind me.

I went straight to my seat, where Aira and Joza were sitting behind me.

"Oh! What happened to you two? Did you run a marathon? Lexa, you look like you were chased by a pack of wolves!" Aira said.

"Yeah, what's going on with you two?" Joza asked curiously.

Lexa was about to speak when Mrs. Reyes suddenly arrived, so she stopped and simply sat down next to me.

And finally, class finished. We have lunch break today. I can't deny that I'm kinda excited to be seen with and be with my ultimate crush. He's also good at basketball, so maybe I'm even more in love with him.

"Alright, let's go! The others might already be in the cafeteria. They're probably getting impatient."

"Hmm! Kasama natin sila Triztan?" Joza asked, confused.

"Sounds like someone has a secret to spill, Joza?" Aira teased, raising an eyebrow.

"He's... well, he's trying to court me," Joza confessed, looking flustered.

"What!"

"Keep it down! Someone might overhear us," I whispered.

"Kailan pa 'yan?" Lexa asked.

"It only started yesterday. Hihih!" Joza replied shyly to Lexa's question.

"Alright, that's enough gossip for now! Let's go, I'm really hungry," Aira said.
