NOBODY ELSE TO BLAMEWhen Bruce Halpern came home from work to discover that Marian, his younger daughter, had hanged herself from the banisters he went into the kitchen and put the kettle on. He put a teabag into a mug decorated with his company’s logo, poured boiling water over it, added a Canderel tablet, and stirred mechanically with a teaspoon for half a minute. Then he went to the fridge to get the milk. There wasn’t any. Marian had used the last of it before killing herself. She hadn’t bothered to do the shopping, even though it was Thursday. Bruce supposed that he couldn’t hold that against her, even though her mother had set a better example.
