Starting Over

I was released from the hospital 3 days later, Mary and I became good friends, and she helped me go back to Grant's and my home to collect my belongings. The police informed me that his lawyer had made a deal to get him released on bail, and he would be getting out the next day. As we entered, I gasped. Nothing had been cleaned up from the night he attacked me, and dried blood was everywhere. The sight made me wonder just how I survived and who called for help. There wasn't much I wanted from the house except a few pictures from my childhood, my clothing, and a stuffed wolf my parents had given me when I was a baby. It only took us an hour to pack my things. As we left, I turned around and viewed what was my home. "It's time to move forward, no more taking crap from anyone!" Mary drove me to the lawyers and gave me a hug, "I will take your things to the motel for you and wait there. Take your time, I'll even order some takeout." Dealing with the lawyer and the bank took most of the day. I stood in front of a large safety deposit door with the bank manager. "This account has been passed down through your family for generations. Are you sure you want to remove the contents and close the account?" "All money has been transferred to my own private account, and as I plan to move immediately from this area, keeping the account and safe deposit box open isn't possible. If needednI will open a new account wherever I move and place the items there. I'm sorry you'll benlosing the account." We turned out keys together, and he stepped out. Inside the large box were several scrolls and ancient books. More than I thought. I stepped out of the private room to ask my lawyer for help. Together, we gathered everything up, and he drove me to the motel where Mary was waiting. We ordered Chinese food and laughed at our fortune cookies. Mary's said that new things were coming in her life, mine said give kindness and gain new friends. I think she got mine, and I got hers. I hobbled out to the shopping plaza that was across the street, I needed to buy myself a few things that I wasn't allowed to have when I lived with Grant. First on my list was a cell phone and a laptop, then some new clothing and essentials. I felt people staring at me and kept my head down. Who wouldn't look at a woman with so many injuries! With my new purchases, I returned to the motel room, thankful to be away from all the stares. The guy at the store kindly set up my new phone and computer for me since I wasn't sure how to do it. I might have to look into some computer classes when I figure out where I'm moving to. I opened the browser like the guy showed me and Google Real Estate for sale across Canada. I currently live in a major city in Alberta, but I need to get as far away as possible. I quickly eliminated anything for the provinces beside mine, too close for my liking. Although I spoke a little French, I didn't know much, so that eliminated Quebec. Both Northern Territories were crossed out as well as the island provinces, Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island Wow, moving is such a major decision with lots to consider. As a PSW, I know I could get a job anywhere that had elderly or a hospital, plus I did have a lot of money now. I thought about what I want in life and where I see myself as I grow old, hopefully one day to have a family, if I can learn to trust a man again. With raising prices of food and the growing enthusiasm of growing your own vegetables and fruit, I knew I would want some decent acreage so I could have animals and gardens. So I did what any confused, frustrated person would do! I wrote down the remaining provinces and put them in a container, and pulled one paper out. ONTARIO. With one decision made now to narrow it down to an area. I made my list of wants: Small Town, Farm Land, 5 to 10 Acres, Close Community, Wooden Area, Jobs close by. It's not a big wish list but something to start with. Opening the Map App of Ontario, I did an overview to see what areas can be eliminated. Southern Ontario seemed to be well populated, although many areas said to be great for growing vegetables. Too many big cities, crossed off list. I can always do a greenhouse and raised garden beds for vegetables, and certain fruit trees won't grow in colder areas, butthat'ss fine. I settled on semi northern Ontario. Four hours later and many cups of te, I finally saw an advertisement for the perfect place at a great price. I researched the tow, and everything sounded perfect. The only thing I didn't see was a retirement home or home for the elderly but there was a couple in towns not far away. The decision made I sent a message to the agent advertising and one to my family lawyer asking if he could help me get the place. I woke the next morning to my new phone ringing, it was my lawyer. He had reviewed the listing with a real-estate lawyer in his firm and made contact with the listing agent. They arranged for a video walk through of the land and buildings as the listing did state property as is, so I expect some repairs are needed. A week later, I signed the final papers for the property, but it didn't take too long as I was paying for it outright for a total price of 215,000 dollars. 10 acres of land with a decent 3 bedroom ranch style home that only needed a few repairs, but some out buildings would need to be torn down. I called Mary and invited her out for dinner to celebrate. We decided on pizza and wings and a few drinks. "Cheers to you, girlfriend! When is the big day?" She exclaimed. " I need to trade in my car, buy a truck and a trailer to carry my things, and I think before I go, I am going to adopt a dog from the human society. If you're not working tomorrow can you come with me? I want to be on the road within the next couple of days." I happily explained. I found a great truck, got new plates that day from the dealership, and was able to drive off the lot with it. Next, we found a trailer shop and chose an enclosed single axle 6x10 trailer. The salesman helped me get the hitches and locks I would need and did the registration and plates so I could take it home. Mary and I stopped at a coffee shop after dropping the trailer at the motel before heading to choose my new dog. As we entered, we could hear the dogs barking in excitement. We told the lady at the front desk we wanted to view the dogs, and she had someone lead us to their area. There were so many types to choose from, I didn't want a small dog or one that was too big for me. I wanted a male dog and one that would be loyal. With over half the dogs on the no-go list, we view a couple of Labradors, German Shepherds, Rottweiler, Doberman Pincher, and a couple of Huskies. I loved them all, but I could only choose one, just as I was going to choose a volunteer came walking in with the most adorable dog I have ever seen. He was a mix between King German Shepherd and a Chow Chow. He had a fluffy coat with the colors of a Shepherd and the wrinkles of a Chow with a purple tongue. This was my new baby. The volunteer told me his name was Chance, and I kept that name. With adoption papers signed and payment made, I attached his new collar and leash. I had bought dog accessories earlier, knowing I was getting a new dog. I just had to pack everything I bought for the new house into the trailer out of the storage unit I had rented, and I can start over.
