I fell into darkness, but I could hear voices calling to me.
"My dear child, it's not your time. You need to fight."
"Stay alive. Better things are to come. The truth will be shown to you."
I shook my head. "Am I dead? Where am I?"
"You're not yet dead, my child, but your body is in pain and needs to heal. I have missed you but I always watched over you!" The gentle voice replied as a low light shined upon a beautiful woman who reminded me of the picture I had of my mother. My eyes widened with tears.
I looked at the other woman with her. It was my grandmother. I embraced her crying. "Yes, you are seeing us both. Let me introduce you to your mother, Gloria. We have been granted permission to visit you as the Fates said your time to die isn't now. We won't be allowed to come again, but always know we are guarding you. Today is your 20th birthday. You've been in a coma for a week now."
"A coma, a week," I stammered.
" Yes, my darling girl, but you will awake and move forward. You have a strength within you to do so. Before we leave you, we need to tell you the truth of your family." my mother stated.
"Our family comes from an ancient line of true witches and warlocks, and so does your father's family. You are the last of our line, the strongest lines of true power, not the want-to-be witches of today that proclaim to be witches and mix up potions. We have powers that come naturally to us. Your grandmother left so very important books for you that her lawyer will hand over when you are better. Read them, study them, and use them for good. If used wrong, the powers will be stripped from you, and your life will wither away." My mother started to fade away as she left.
"We love you sweetheart, stay strong and don't let any human know of our secret. Humans aren't ready to know the truth. There are other beings in the world that hide as well. Only when you can fully trust someone can you tell your secret to them but be wary of who you tell." My grandmother hugged me as she faded away.
"Beep...beep...beep," the steady sound echoed through my head. As I attempted to open my eyes, the brightness overwhelmed me. I tried to move my arm to cover them, but it felt heavy. A firm hand grabbed hold of my arm, and a soft voice spoke, " Don't move, I'll turn the lights down. Give yourself a few minutes, you've been asleep for a week now.Dont try to speak. I've called for the doctor to come remove the ventilation tube, and then we can unhook you from the machines"
I waited and tried again to open my eyes,I looked around in shock. I was in the hospital, machines all around me. The kind nurse stood over me with a look of sorrow and concern. A man in a white coat rushed in.
He went to place a hand on my arm, and instinctively, I flinched, and he backed away. " No worries, young lady, I'm your doctor. No one here will hurt you. I need to check your vitals and remove your breathing tube. Is it OK to approach you to do this? Blink once for yes and twice for no."
I blinked my eyes once, and he started working on me, removing the tubes, turning off machines, and checking me over.
"There are some lawyers and police that are waiting for you to wake up. I think it's best that it wait until tomorrow for them to come, but I will let them know you're out of your coma." The doctor stated. "You're a fighter young lady, and we are so glad you pulled through."
The nurse brought me some water and told me to sip slowly. Her kind eyes smiled at me. " I'm going to have one of our PSWs come sit with you. I know one who has been very worried about you. She has stopped in every day to talk with you while you were in your coma ."
A few minutes later, Mary entered the room wearing her uniform. "Amaris, I'm so glad to see you awake. I wish I had done more for you, and I feel so guilty that I never noticed the signs of what you were going through." She leaned over and kissed my forehead.
Tears swelled in my eyes as I croaked out my response. " N..not your f.f.fault, th.th.thank you for caring."
I rested for most of the day whole Mary read outlook a romance book she found in the waiting room. At meal time, she assisted me with eating, encouraging me to do most on my own.
My right arm is broken, and my wrist had 4 screws put in. My left hand was fractured from when he stomped on it, and I had several cuts from the glass table breaking underneath me. My head was bandage, and I was told I had sustained a severe injury possibly from being hit with a lamp or heavy object and there was bruising around my neck from Grant strangling me with the cord.
"When I get out of here, I am moving far away." I promised myself as I fell asleep.
The next morning, two officers came to see me. They informed me that Grant is still in custody, and the judge denied him bail due to a previous charge he had pending and skipped bail on. That news shocked me, but I was glad he couldn't get to me. I gave my statement of what I could remember, and Mary informed them that she had seen handmsrjs on me as well before they left.
She quietly sat beside me to let me process what I heard. With a sigh, I looked at her. "Thank you again. He wouldn't let me have friends, but I hope you will allow me to call you, friend."
She nodded and smiled at me, then wrote her number down for me. " Call me anytime, I know you're going to want to leave this area, and I encourage that. I moved here 5 years ago because of something similar. You are strong and a fighter. I believe you will be okay."
A strange man knocked at the door, "Excuse me, are you Amaris Kinley granddaughter of Emilia Kensington?"
Mary got up, " This is a private matter, I'll go have my lunch break and leave you alone."
As she exited, the man informed me he was my family's lawyer, and because I was now 20 years old, he needed to deal with my inheritance. "I apologize for having to meet you this way and hope you are getting better. Your grandmother held your parents' estate in trust for you, and you are to receive her estate as well. There are bank accounts from your parents totaling 1.5 million dollars, and from your grandmother, an account of 700 thousand dollars. Also, your grandmother has a special safety deposit box content for your eyes only, but I have all the paperwork to sign everything over to you."
He placed files in front of me and showed me where I was to sign them, he let me know that when I leave the hospital that he would take me to the bank to put everything into my name.
