CHAPTER 2 THE ATTACK
I shouldn't have gone back to the forest.
He told me not to. I went anyway.
All day in the kitchen my hands shake. I burn the food. The head cook looks at me but doesn't say anything.
I can't stop thinking about him. His hands on my face. The way he looked at me. Like I was something. Like I mattered.
No one looks at me like that.
When the sun starts to go down I made a choice. I'm going back.
I walk the path It gets dark fast in the forest. My heart is moving fast in my chest.
I'm nervous. I'm excited. I know he told me not to come. He warned me. But I'm going anyway.
The trees get bigger. The light gets soft. I can hear the birds. The streams far away.
I'm looking for him. Looking in the shadows. Looking for his eyes. Grey eyes. Cold eyes.
I'm not paying attention.
The smell comes first.
Dark magic. Bad magic. I know this smell. It's Vera's magic. My stomach turns. My skin crawls. This is the curse. The thing that keeps my wolf locked up inside. This is my aunt.
A man steps out from the trees.
Big man. Scars on his face. Scars on his arms. He looks at me and I see his face change. He knows who I am.
"Keira," he says.
My name sounds wrong. Like a threat. Like a weapon.
"Come with me," he says. "Vera wants you."
My blood goes cold.
"No," I say.
My voice shakes. I hate it.
"I'm not going with you."
He walks toward me. Not fast. Slow. Like he knows I can't run. Like he knows I can't win nor hide
His hand reaches out.
I try to move back. He moves faster. His arm catches mine. He pulls hard
I felt a sharp pain in my whole arm I make a sound. A cry. The sound echoes in the trees.
His grip is tight. I can't get away. I'm weak. I've always been weak. My wolf is locked. I have nothing.
I try to run but he pulls me back. But I couldn't my feet got stuck in the dirt I'm falling.
This is it, I think. This is how it ends. Vera decided. She's done with me. She's sending him to kill me.
He drags me into the dark part of the forest. Away from the path. Away from people. My hands grab at trees and rocks and branches. Nothing helps.
Then.
Something moves.
Fast.
So fast.
The man is gone. He's not holding me anymore. I fell.
I hear the sound of his body hit something hard. A tree. The sound is bad. Loud. The ground shakes.
He screams.
A scream that goes through my whole body. A scream that sounds like pain. So much pain.
I spin around.
Ezra.
He stands over the man. His chest move. He's breathing hard.
There's blood. Everywhere. On his clothes. On his face. On his hands.
The man tries to crawl away. His body is bent , Broken unrecognizable.
Ezra doesn't stop.
He moves. Fast like the forest is nothing. Fast like air is nothing.
The man screams again.
Then a crack. Loud crack. Bones. The sound of breaking things.
Then nothing.
The man stops movining, silence in the whole forest
.
Ezra stands there. His chest moves up and down. His eyes are black. Not grey. Black. Full of anger.
He looks at the man on the ground. He doesn't move. He just stands.
Blood drips.
Then he turns to me
His face changes when he sees me.
The anger is still there. I can see it. A living thing inside him.
But under it is something else.
Something I don't have a name for.
He walks toward me slow. Slow like a hunter. Like I'm the thing he's hunting now.
I can't move.
My feet don't work. My body doesn't work.
He stops in front of me.
He reaches out and grabs my wrist.
His hand is cold. Ice cold. His grip is strong. Not soft.
He pulls me close to him.
I feel the blood. On his clothes. Still warm. On me now too.i thought I asked you not to come here alone," he says.
His voice is low. Dark. Like something underneath the words. Underneath everything.
"I told you not to."
"I"
"You came back to the forest," he says.
He's not asking. He's telling me what I did.
"You came back here. At dark. Where I said not to come."
"I didn't mean"
"You came back for me," he says.
It's not a question.
He sees it on my face. He knows. He knows why I came back.
His grip gets tight on my wrist.
"You are coming with me now ," he says.
Not a question.
Not a request.
A command.
I understand this. He's an Alpha. I'm something else. Something less. Something he owns.
"Now," he says.
He starts to walk.
He pulls me with him.
Into the dark forest.
Away from the path.
Away from the compound.
Away from everything.
And I understand something in this moment.
I have no choice.
This is done.
I'm his now.
I can't change it.
And the thing that scares me most?
I don't want to change it.
He drags me deeper into the dark.
Everything is different now.
Everything I knew is gone.
And I'm terrified.
